Bass Fishing Report; Waconia; June 3, 2007

Overcast, on and off showers.  NNW wind 10-15 mph

Didn't get to the lake until 11:00 Sunday morning, when I arrived it was overcast and the wind was out of the NNW at about 15mph.  I took the overcast skies as an opportunity to go see if there were any fish to be had in the shallow cover that surrounds the lakes shoreline.  We started swimming and pitching jigs to pencil reeds and adjacent grass cover.  We started on the outside edge and caught a few small fish, as we worked our way towards the inside of the grass/reeds where the water temp was 69 degrees the fishing picked up.  We proceeded to catch about 6 or 7 fish within the next 20 minutes.  Some fell victim to black/blue swim jigs, but the better fish were hugging the cover.  I switched to a homemade flippin jig and instantly stuck a good 4lb bucketmouth right in the thickest part of the reed patch.  It came out with a bloody tail and appeared to still be in spawning mode, which suprised me !

About 12:30 - 1:00 the skies opened  up and the rain came down for about 20 minutes, we continued to fish the area with jigs and plastics with only a few more small fish to show.  After working some nearby docks with no success we decided to pick up and motor across the lake to large flat.  After the rain cleared the wind almost stopped and we started making long casts with jigs and crankbaits in about 3' - 6' fow.  The flat is very gradual and has a combination of scattered weed and rock cover.  The water temp on the flat was down to 66.5 degrees after the rain, about 10 casts into fishing the flat I hooked up with another healthy Waconia largemouth that just hammered my jig.  The fish came out of about 4' of water in a hard bottom area.  She had beutiful color and measured 19.5 inches and 5lbs.  We caught a few more fish on the flat and moved to another patch of pencil reeds.  After the reeds produced nothing we fished down another shallow flat, this one was little deeper, dumping into about 8' of water.  We caught 5 or 6 more fish on crankbaits and swim jigs.  After four hours on the lake we had over 25 fish and a couple very nice specimans.  It was the first time I had been out on Waconia this year, and certainly plan to go back.  There are so many different ways to catch bass, it really makes for an enjoyable day on the lake.
