9/23/07 Lake Ripley Fishing Report
By Paul Strege

Sunday Morning Conditions: Winds SE 5mph, Sunny, 68 deg water temp.

This morning I experienced the true advantage to owning a Humminbird Side Imaging unit. As many of Lake Ripley ’s weedbeds are in various stages of seasonal decline, finding lush, green weedbeds can be very time consuming. Many of Ripley’s weedbeds are currently overgrown with Stonewort (a needle-leafed, pale-green weed).  With my Side Imaging unit, however, I was able to quickly scan weedbeds, in a single pass, and correctly identify the denser beds of healthy milfoil. And in those beds, I located some healthy-sized bass.

Although I missed the first bite on my first flip with a ˝ Ounce Kissimmee Blue Gambler Ninja Jig, I was able to connect with nearly all of the other bites this morning. I tipped the Ninja Jig with a Flappy Daddy. The flipping fish were of decent quality, with every fish landed over the 14 inch mark, and the best fish of the day measuring just under 19 inches long. Combined with a beautiful sunrise, it was an enjoyable morning to say the least.

I did try other techniques such as topwater and cranking, but flipping produced immediately when the others would not.

Flippin’ Rig: Rogue Rods Flipping Stick (FS 766 XC) with 15 lb P-Line FloroClear.
