Bass Fishing Report; Lake Ripley; May 20, 2007

Conditions: Rain, Overcast, 55 deg air, 62 deg water

I knew I had discovered the right area this morning when I bent over to grab my rain coat for protection from the rain that had just started. When I stood up, two bass were swimming with a jerkbait in their mouth about 10 yards from the boat. I reeled in my lure and took the pair of fish off. For the next 10 consecutive casts, I landed a fish. After the bite started to taper, I picked up a texas-rigged Gambler Ace and caught my biggest fish of the day. The corner was a sharper drop, with the boat sitting in 20 feet of water and weeds in 8-10 feet. Varying the retrieve cadence seemed to trigger inactive fish.

Fishing was pretty slow other than that weedline turn. A few bass were found elsewhere, but very scattered. I experimented with colors and types of jerkbaits, but a smaller size seemed to out-produce a larger size.
