Bass Fishing Report; Rice Lake; May 7, 2006

May 7, 2006. I launched at 9am and headed to a northern black bottom bay- air temperature was 54 degrees. I stopped at the mouth of the bay and fished my way in because I figured pre-spawn would be the prevailing pattern. I fished 2 points and an inside turn and did not get a bite. I then moved into the bay and threw a swim jig in new lily pad growth. Within 5 minutes I had 7 keepers in the 2 lb. range.

I got the swim jig hung up on a stump and when I went in to retrieve it I was shocked and amazed to see a bed with a big female on it. she spooked when I was within 10' of her. I got my jig back and raised my trolling motor - I fished the rest of the bay drifting and steering with a push pole. The water was gin clear so stealth was a key. I threw a white Senko with a 4/0 Gamakatsu hook on 15 lb. Seaguar flourocarbon at the beds. If they didn't take the bait but were not spooked I threw a drop shot with a nose hooked mini craw worm. My biggest 5 fish in that bay exceeded 20 lbs. My biggest single day on a northern lake on the first Saturday of May. I was able to replicate that pattern in 3 other bays. Water temperature varied between 57 to 61 degrees.

I have lived up here for over 10 years and I have never, ever seen spawners the first weekend in May. I encountered no less than 15 other boats that came and left in the first bay and I did not see anyone get bit - I saw more chartreuse spinnerbaits then a tackle store has  and I think the bass have seen too many as well. If you get a chance, get out there!! The fishing is incredible!!
