temperature 59 degrees – wind 13 mph out of the south. I got a
chance to break away for a few hours (6:30 am to 9:30 am) to check out
the smallmouth action with a friend that had never been on the lake, but
was pre-fishing for an upcoming tournament. The fish were very
cooperative. I felt that
the spawn should be very close if not already started so we hit some
humps and sand flats. The first spot we hit yielded a solid limit
including one fish pushing 5 lbs, a 4 lb, and several in the 3 lb class
– there is a lot of beds right now in the 5.5 to 7’ depths that are
holding males, with the females staging on the first drop and moving on
an off the flats feeding with regularity. We are days from the full
blown spawn. I caught most of my fish on a The second
spot had beds in the same depth range, and my fishing partner had a toad
of a smallie (a solid 6 lb fish) on, but it came unbuttoned. Jerkbaits
were also a producer this day, but the cadence had to be varied often or
you would not get bit. Now is the
time to get out there if you get a chance!! |
