Bass Fishing Report; Mississippi River Pool 7; Oct. 15, 2006

Fall fishing is normally all about finding the schools of aggressive fish chasing shad along a bank or in weeds. Today was a little different than normal. The largemouth were no where to be found and the smallmouth bite was very tough on wing dams. The water temp had dropped from 55 degrees on Thursday to a chili 45 degrees on Saturday and Sunday.

The key today was to find an area where bass have been holding and you know where shad are schooled up. A good thing to look for are diving seagulls or busting shad. I found both in an area and dissected it until I got bit. The fish were sitting deep...and when I say deep, I mean like 15-18 feet of water. The largemouth were so lethargic because of the temperature drop that they would only bite if the bait was stopped (dead-sticking). I was throwing a 9/16oz flipping jig from Brovarney Baits called "Sweetness".

The smaller bass were shallow and were more aggressive. They bigger ones were deep, holding on wood. I was able to catch a limit of fish that weighed around 12lbs. Do give you a general idea of how tough the bite was...only 2 people brought in limits out of 16 guys. Does that sound like fall fishing to you!?
