Bass Fishing Report: Mississippi River Pool 5 – May 10, 2007

Main Channel Water Temp 61.2 Degrees
Backwater as high as 69.5 degrees
Flow 37,300 CFS

I was pre-fishing for the Bassmaster Weekend Series tournament. The river stage is very low for this time of the year. I found good concentrations of largemouth in the Weaver bottoms on new lily pad growth in 1 to 3 feet of water with a BC Gil colored ¼ ounce Brovarney swim jig with an Action Plastics 5” Junebug grub. All of the fish I found today were post-spawn.

I also found quantities of largemouth on a pattern of flipping cut bank with a homemade black/blue 3/8 ounce jig. These fish all ran in the 2 lb. range.

The smallmouth bite was awesome on sand points and drops. I found these wish with the BC Gil colored Brovarney swim jig then slowed down and defined the area with a Get Bit Baits 3.5” tube in green pumpkin/copper flake, as well as a Carolina rigged Senko. These sand smallies were better fish from 17” to 20.5” and were hanging out in 1.5’ of water, to the first drop, typically at 6’.

The bite is good right now!
