Bass Fishing Report: Mississippi River Pool 5 - April 30th, 2006

River Stage 6.8 - Flow 52,100 cfs

I had a tournament from 8am to 2pm. Air temperature was 51 degrees at take off - it was raining extremely hard for the first 3 hours we fished. I finished in 3rd place with 4 largemouth weighing 11 lbs - my biggest fish was 4.25 lbs. First place was also 4 fish (12.35 lbs) - 3 largemouth and a smallmouth with a beautiful 6.26 lb largemouth kicker and second place was 5 largemouth for 12.25 lbs. All of my fish were caught in moderate to heavy flow right off the main channel. I was throwing a 1/4 ounce Brovarney right up tight to the grass on the bank, then holding my rod tip high for a few seconds without reeling to let the grub tail work in the flow. ALL the fish that bumped came tight to the cover. If the grass had wood next to it you could almost guarantee a fish, if there was rock and wood you had the potential to catch a good fish. First place was won fishing the same type of cover but the method was flipping a Sweet Beaver. Second place was taken by also swimming a jig tight to grass. I hit 6 or 7 smallmouth spots and caught only one short smallmouth.
