Bass Fishing Report: Mississippi River Pool 5 – April 26th, 2007

Main Channel Water Temp 53.8 Degrees – Backwater as high as 61 degrees

Flow 50,700 CFS

I was out pre-fishing for a weekend tournament. Fishing was nothing short of awesome! All of the fish we found we relating to flow. Bank grass hanging in the water in 2 to 3 feet yielded nice 2.5 to 3 lb fish on both Gil and White Gringo colored Brovarney swim jigs, with 3/8 ounce jigs being the preferred tool – the extra weight was needed to punch through the grass – the retrieve needed to be at a snail’s pace. The Fisher’s Island/Weaver Bottoms area was definitely on fire!

Around 50% of the daymarks held quality smallies in the eddies on the downstream sides. The ticket for these fish were Get Bit Baits 2.5” tubes in the color green pumpkin pepper copper flake. It was my first time using these tubes and the tentacle action and profile were incredible. On one daypoint I caught 4 smallmouth on consecutive casts when other approaches yielded nothing.

I did find a big bass pattern that was VERY consistent from spot to spot. If you could find a sand point that was 50 to 100 yards or longer and it had heavy flow, there was 4 to 5.5 lb largemouth on it.

I must say this – typically in spring I watch the surface temperature and let that hold heavy bearing on my fishing decisions – the warmest water did NOT hold the best fish.
