Bass Fishing Report: Mississippi River Pool 5A – April 27th, 2007

Main Channel Water Temp 55.4 Degrees – Backwater as high as 60.3 degrees

Flow 48,900 CFS

I was out pre-fishing for a weekend tournament. I had not been on pool 5A in several years. I started on the south end and immediately caught some good fish on rock in 5’ of water with a Get Bit Baits 3.5” tube in the color dark melon pepper – that stretch of rock was loaded with good fish but areas with dead weed 8 or more feet out from the rock had concentrations of quality fish.

From there I moved to a backwater bay and struck gold – the water temp was 60.3 degrees and after looking around on the trolling motor I found some large beds in 1.5’ of water that had males on them. I backed off to the first drop with a 7/8 ounce Gil colored Brovarney swim jig and plucked 2 good females – that ledge was loaded with fish in 16’ of water. The big females were staging in textbook fashion, getting ready to move up.

Next stop was the backwaters of Merrick State Park and I put together a solid pattern of sand point largemouth. There was a limit of fish on every point that had flow on it.  I felt that this pattern however was good for only around a 10 lb limit, as all of these fish were 2 lb cookie cutters.

Unfortunately for me on tournament day I lost a couple of big deep water fish and ended up in 5th place with just over 11 and ½ pounds. My no-boater, Nate Razin, in his first tournament, won with 15.65 lbs. I am tickled to death for him!! We were fishing the 16’ drop mentioned above. As a side note, 2nd place was Brian Beebe who fished the rock also mentioned above and picked up 15.5 lbs. Nice job guys!!
