Bass Fishing Report; Mississippi River Pool 13; Savanna, IL; April 2, 2006

Well it was far from a perfect weather day but the thunderstorms held off long enough for me to get out for a few hours. I spent a good deal of my time idling around trying to learn the layout of some new areas, but I could not resist finding a couple of fish before heading home.

The water temperature was 45 degrees and the weather was overcast with mild winds from the south. The water clarity is about normal with about 6” visibility. I started fishing some riprap along the railroad tracks south of Savanna with a bruised banana colored jig but it did not produce so I switched to a 7/16oz. white inverted tandem spinnerbait from Strictly Bass Lures http://www.strictlybasslures.com call the I.T. FINatic. I slow rolled this down the bank and struck pay dirt. In 30 minutes I caught 3 nice largemouth that went about 10lbs total the largest was 4lbs. These fish were very fat. The smallest, in fact, was barely 14.5” but weighed 2.25lbs. This is really a great time of the year for big fish. Just slow down a bit and watch for a light bite and then a hard fight.

Here are a couple words about the IT FINatic spinnerbait that are not obvious if you see one before wrapping up. Strictly Bass Lures has been one of the most popular Ohio River spinnerbaits for years and has just recently begun working their way into the upper Mississippi River tournament scene. These baits have the wire matched to each weight to keep then thinner thus cutting down on water resistance. In river current this is very important. The blades are made out of brass instead of steel. These not only sound different but produce a different vibration due to the fact that bass is heavier than steel. The inverted tandum configuration places the big Colorado blade on the swivel while the willow is on the arm. This bait that will thump very hard and is great for slow rolling but can also be fished fast. These innovative changes paired with top grade components like Sampo swivels and Mustad hook yield a superior spinnerbait.
