Bass Fishing Report; Mille Lacs, August 29, 2006

Sunny ENE Winds 5-15 mph.
Temp Low 70's

After fishing for Largemouth on Minnetonka Monday, I decided to shake things up a little and go hunting for sumo smallies on Mille Lacs.  This was my first trip to Mille Lacs to seriously fish smallies.  After looking at the forecast for the day and seeing East winds we decided to drive to the Southeast part of the lake and launch out of Isle.  We got on the water about 7:30, it was high skies and the wind was ENE about 10-15 mph, started out fishing a rock point that produced no action.

Went across the bay from there to a large rock reed in the middle of the bay.  We fished two entire sides of the reef, everywhere from 2 to 8 feet of water.  Using mostly tubes I decided to switch to a spring craw Bandit crank bait and within a few casts had the first action of the day.  It was about a 14 to 15" smallie that ripped off about 10' from the boat.  A few casts later I had another one on I got into the boat, about the same size.  We caught one more small fish before we left the reef.  By this time it was probably 9:30 or so, we decided to pick up and go fish a rock bank that lead to a main lake point.  My fishing partner for the day (My Dad), hooked his first smallie for the day off the bank.  We pulled a few more small fish off the rock bank, not what we were looking for though.  Decided to change gears a little bit and get out into the main lake.  I picked a reef a couple hundred yards off shore and headed that way.  On the way I went over a small unmarked hump a little ways out from the point.  I decided to through out a marker and fish around it, within a few casts we each had fish on.  Both using 4"

tubes with 3/8 oz tube jigs, I was using craw/chartreuse and my father was using a gold/brown color.  We caught 5 or 6 smallies in about 30 minutes.  Almost all between 14-16 inches, no huge fish yet.  The last fish we caught on this spot did have what we figured to be a 20-21 inch smallie following it to the boat, got a good look at it, pretty fat girl, couldn't get her to take tubes or a crank bait.

We left this spot and fished a few more reefs with little action.  The last reef of the day we pulled up on was a large shallow reef close to a point.  We fished around the edges of it at first, then started making casts towards the larger boulders - this produced the best fish of the day.  This 19 3/4 inch smallie weighed in at 4.6 lbs....it was about in about 2 feet of water in the big rocks.  We had a few more blow ups on top water on this flat, but couldn't get hooks in em....

I was pretty satisfied with our day considering it was our first time out on Mille Lacs.  The better action seemed to come from shallow off shore reefs.  Almost all the fish we caught were with 4" craw colored tubes, a few on crank baits as well.  Can't wait to get back out there !
