Bass Fishing Report; Madison Chain of Lakes, May 7^th, 2006

I had the chance to get out and fish the Madison Chain during opening weekend and the following is what I found to be working. The day was May 7^th and it was Saturday. The temperature was in the mid sixties and we had a water temperature of about 58 degrees. There was a wind from the S/SW at about 5-15 mph and it increased during the day. There were blue bird skies following the cold front that crossed the area in the days prior. And lastly, there were a number of boats out due to this being the fishing opener for the state of Wisconsin.

As far as my fishing day, here is what I found through out my day. We started of by fishing the shallows of Mud Lake. We were throwing Brovarney Swim Jigs in the Blue Devil pattern and caught a short large mouth in the first five minutes. We continued to fish there for about another twenty minutes, but could tell that the fish were already highly pressured by 9:30 so we moved out of there in hopes of finding some fresh fish. Another reason we decided to leave was due to the fact that the weed growth was already weeks ahead of last years in this area.

We ended up going back into Lake Wabesa and remained there the rest of the day. We continued throwing swim jigs in both the Blue Devil pattern and in BC’s Gil. These continued to produce some fish for us, but we switched things up looking for better results. I fished a Senko for the next few hours targeting bedding bass and caught some really quality fish. This first one was about 3 pounds. One thing I found, was that with all this pressure, long casts were key. This made exact placement very difficult.

Later in the day we switched up presentations again in hopes of locating some staging females. We were using creature baits and working them through the weed cover. My cousin Steve caught these two nice large mouths this way. We spent the rest of the day working this technique. We were fishing water mostly less than three feet deep and weed growth was a main factor. I would say that most of the bass will be up in the shallows in the next week, or two and stress the importance of being careful with these fish as they are highly vulnerable right now.
