Bass Fishing Report; Lake Wisconsin, August 26, 2006

Conditions:
Water Temp: 72 degrees surface.
Winds calm.
Fog.

Conditions today were ideal for the summertime bass angler. Heavy fog settled on the lake early in the morning, and did not lift by the time I left the water. The lack of sun kept pleasure boaters at home, and the calm waters put the bass on the move. There were primarily two patterns that worked today: a Gambler Cane Toad over the top of slop, and a white / chartreuse swim jig targeted at isolated cover.

The Cane Toad rig consisted of a 7-foot Rogue Rods Magnum Bass Rod in Heavy Action with 65 pound Power Pro. I worked a Green Pumpkin Pearl Swirl Gambler Cane Toad over the top of sporadic slop. For today, the slop that was all pads, or all duck weed did not hold fish. The best areas had a mix of the two. The slop that held fish ranged from 1-1/2 to 2 feet deep. One fish in a slop patch was typically followed by a couple others. Largest fish in the slop was just over 2 pounds.

The swim jig produced the best fish of the day, a chunky 2-1/2 pounder. A 7-foot Rogue Rods Magnum Bass Rod in Medium-Heavy Action with 15 pound P-Line Floroclear was the rig I used for the swim jig. As I only had limited time to fish this morning, I was not able to refine the color. The bass were not by any means inhaling the jig, but working it slow and not reacting immediately still put fish in the boat. Isolated wood and rock off seemed to be the ticket. As with the slop, the fish were bunched together.

For both patterns, fish numbers were not great, but size was decent compared to other outings I've had on Lake Wisconsin .
