Bass Fishing Report; Lake Wisconsin, July 4, 2007

By Paul Strege

Conditions: Slight Breeze, Sunny, 80-82 deg surface water temp.

I arrived at Lake Wisconsin at around 11:00 AM. Although the pleasure boaters were out in full force for the Holiday , back bays offered refuge from the traffic and plenty of fish to hold my interest. With the sun directly overhead, I targeted shallow water bays with a mix of emergent vegetation. Larger lily pads that appeared “aged” compared to others were the best. In many cases where I found fish striking on topwater Gambler Cane Toads, blown-in milfoil and other floating weeds collected around isolated pads to create large mats. Under those mats were the active bass.

In the second main lake bay that I tried, the slop ran directly up to a rock shoreline. And I would later discover that the shoreline also held a depth of 2 feet. That was more than enough living space for the bass pictured below. After catching a couple fish closer to shore, I found that I could simply pitch the Cane Toad to the rock bank and cover more water with shorter casts – all without affecting the number of strikes.

I also experimented with a Daichi Hitch Hiker and Owner Straight Shank hook. The results were impressive: it did not affect the topwater frog’s performance, I caught multiple fish on one toad, and my hook-up percentage was nearly 100%. I’m sold on this rigging for the Cane Toad now.

Although I failed to find any kicker fish today, the majority of ones I caught were decent limit fish for any tournament. In total I landed about 20 fish in 5 hours.
