Bass Fishing Report; Lake Wisconsin, 10/27/07
By:
Paul Strege

Saturday Conditions: Winds NW 15-20 mph, Mostly Cloudy, 54 deg water temp.

This Saturday I headed out on the Lake Wisconsin system to fish for some upper river smallmouth. To make the run easier, I launched in Portage and worked my way to the south. I was surprised to find the river levels relatively high which made running around much easier. One cabin owner that I talked to said the river was up nearly 3 feet when compared to Labor Day levels.

The smallmouth were largely scattered today, so there was nothing definitive for me to pattern. I caught those fish on a combination of casting spinnerbaits tight to cover, flipping creature baits (Gambler Bacon Rind) to laydowns and wood, and probing rip rap banks with a 3-1/2” tube. Sand bars and drops appeared not to be holding any fish this outing. Those smallies that I did tangle with really put up a fight in the strong current that accompanied the higher river levels. The largest fish of the day, however, was only around 16 inches long.

Flippin’ Rig: Rogue Rods Flipping Stick (FS 766 XC) with 15 lb P-Line FloroClear. 3/8 Ounce Gambler Florida Rig weight, June Bug Gambler Bacon Rind, 5/0 Owner J-Hook.

Tube Rig: Rogue Rods Spin Jig SJ663S, white 3-1/2” tube with 1/8 ounce weight, 10 lb Trilene XL.
