Bass Fishing Report; Lake Puckaway, September 2, 2006

Water temp: 67 degrees
heavy fog until 7:30am. Sunny thereafter.
Winds calm.

Today I spent the morning on Lake Puckaway . I had not fished this lake since moving to Madison , but have been waiting to give it a try. And it did not disappoint. My action for the morning could have been condensed into two half-hour periods. I targeted the slop for fun. I had to cover a lot of water in order to locate the fish, but once I provoked a blow-up, several others followed.

The best slop was fairly shallow 18-24 inches. The areas with eel grass were the most productive. I was somewhat disappointed with the lake up until I had located my first school of fish. I used my tried-and-true Gambler Cane Toad to put the fish in the boat. My first cast in a completely new area created 3 separate wakes toward my toad! I reeled the Cane Toad just as slow as I could to keep the legs kicking. That cast yielded a 4 pounder, and back-to-back casts after that yielded some solid limit fish around 2 to 2-1/2 pounds. Too bad it wasn't tournament day: 3 casts, close to 9 pounds in the boat. Just after I thought I had milked that area, I had an absolute monster on that I horsed over half-way back to the boat, but the super shallow water combined with the fish racing towards me set it free.

I also experimented with buzzbaits and topwater frogs, but did not get many hits after the school shut down. The frog produced one weak hit.

I can't wait until Fall to try this lake again, as I am sure the fatties will be even more active!
