Bass Fishing Report: Sturgeon Bay, Lake Michigan 10-20 & 10-21, 2007

Saturday Conditions: Winds WSW 15-25 mph, Partly Cloudy, 58 deg water temp.

Sunday Conditions: Winds NE 10 mph, Partly Cloudy, 58 deg water temp.

This weekend marked the first time I ventured out on Sturgeon Bay . I was accompanied by Chris Gulden of St. Michael , Minnesota . With strong, sustained winds over the entire weekend, the lake was quite intimidating. Saturday was the most challenging as southwesterly winds raised wave heights close to 5 feet. Nonetheless I made the trip and traveled out of the bay to fish various points, islands and rocky flats.

Over the weekend I only landed two smallmouth, but they were good ones: one over 3 pounds on Saturday and a fat 4 pounder Sunday morning. Both fish were holding on a 10 to 20-foot rock drop-off. The first bass fell for a drop shot Berkley Gulp Leech, while Sunday’s catch bit a 4” Gambler Tube. For the quality of habitat that I covered over the weekend, I was surprised that I could not locate more smallmouth. On a side note, the northern pike were very active; the four that Chris and I brought to the boat ranged in size from 8 to 11 pounds.

Drop Shot Rig: Rogue Rods Drop Shot rod (DS 693S) with 6 lb Trilene XL and #2 Owner Octopus Hook and 1/4 to 1/2 ounce Owner Drop Shot weight (depending upon wind strength).

Tube Rig: Rogue Rods Magnum Bass MB704C with 15 lb P-Line CXX and ½ ounce Tube Hook. Green Pumpkin Gambler Tube.
