Bass Fishing Report; Big
Green Lake, 5/26/08 |

|
Monday Morning Conditions: Winds SW 10-15 mph, Sunny, 52-55 deg water temp., 60-63 deg water temp in bays. I spent my Memorial Day morning fishing Big Green Lake. I was anxious to learn this lake a little more since my first visit there last fall. Unlike last year, the visibility on the main lake was relatively poor. The water had clouded up, reducing the visibility to 6-inches or less. Needless to say, other than one small smallmouth, I struggled to find any other fish in the main lake. I abandoned working jerkbaits and other ledge presentations after an hour with only one fish. But, the bays were a different story. Surprisingly, after making my way into a bay at around 8:00AM, the visibility had improved from the rest of the lake. The water temperature was also significantly higher and the fish were active. In the first bay that I entered, I caught over a dozen fish in the first 30 minutes. A Green Pumpkin Gambler Swim Blade definitely had the attention of the bass. The largest fish that I caught in the first bay that I visited hit the 19-inch mark on my ruler. Lily Pads and other vegetation was just starting to emerge in the bay.
One main lake cove also produced four fish on a combination of the Swim Blade and a white Gambler Super Stud. The fish in that particular spot were relating to tree / wood lay-downs in the water. The temperature in the protected cove was only ½ a degree higher than the rest of the lake, well short of the 62 degrees I had found in the first bay. My final stop of the day was another bay. In that area, I found some spawning fish in super-shallow water. And they were nice ones, too. After trying various lures for a while without getting a reaction from the bedding bass, I backed off the beds past where I could spot them and started to blind cast the area. Almost immediately, I caught a 2-1/2 pounder that I had previously spotted on the Super Stud. Additional casts also produced two other fish, with another one being in the same weight class as the first. One other bedding fish I spotted had to be in the 5-pound class, and I could not get her to take any of my offerings. Although it was tough to do with so many fish within sight, I left the bay around 11:30 AM and headed home. Super Stud Rig: Rogue Rods Magnum Bass MB664C with 15-pound P-Line Floroclear and White Gambler Super Stud. Fished weightless with 5/0 Owner J-Hook. Swim Blade Rig: Rogue Rods Magnum Bass MB664C with 15-pound P-Line Floroclear and 3/8 ounce Green Pumpkin Gambler Swim Blade and Green Pumpkin Red Flake Twin Tail Trailer. I also recorded one cool underwater image from my Humminbird SI Unit. Off of one of the main lake points, I visually spotted 6-8 sections of submerged concrete pipe last fall in 12-feet of water. Although the water this visit was cloudy, I was able to quickly scan the area with the Side Imaging and relocate the pipes in one pass. Although I did not catch any fish off of them this trip, I plan to revisit the area my next trip out. |
