Bass Fishing Report; Big Green Lake, 11/04/07
By:
Paul Strege

Sunday Conditions: Winds SW 0-5 mph, Overcast until 9:30AM, then Sunny, 53 deg water temp., 45 deg air temp

I went back to Big Green on Sunday to see if I could build upon the smallmouth bite from the weekend before. The day started really slow. After going fishless most of the morning, I abandoned the areas that produced the previous weekend, kicked the MinnKota on 60% power, and just went sight fishing. I bounced around to a few different locations and finally spotted a few smallmouth cruising the depths. At that point, I slowed down and tried dropshotting and casting small tubes without success. Even the LuckyCraft Pointer that I used to catch fish the previous weekend would not trigger a bite. Fortunately, after switching lures and experimenting with retrieve cadences, a Rapala X-Rap would trigger a few fish into giving chase. Within 20 minutes, I caught 5 smallies, all at the 16 inch mark, on a combination of the X-Rap and a white Gambler Super Stud. Shortly thereafter, I had to head back home, so I did not have a chance to locate any other schools of smallmouth. The sun’s appearance at 9:30 AM definitely made the fish easier to spot, and likely caused the smallmouth to become active.
