Bass Fishing Report; Big Green Lake, 10/28/07
By:
Paul Strege

Sunday Conditions: Winds Calm A.M., Winds W 10-15 mph after noon, Sunny, 56 deg water temp., 38 - 55 deg air temp

Sunday marked my first time out on Big Green Lake and it did not disappoint. The clarity of water made it both entertaining and challenging to catch the large bass that Green has become known for. I could see bottom down to 15 feet in many places. And fishing in 8-10 feet felt like I was fishing in an aquarium. It did not take too long for me to spot some really good smallmouth and largemouth cruising the mid-depth flats. The challenge was getting those fish to commit to a strike. Surface lures such as Chug Bugs and Zara Spooks caused groups of fish to follow for great distances right to the boat upon which they would dive and sit on the bottom below. The first time that occurred, I slipped a drop shot over the edge of the boat, only to watch a nice smallie grab the sinker and not the lure.

I finally caught some fish on that particular flat later in the day when the wind picked up. The lure of choice was a Lucky Craft Pointer 100. I had to rip the jerkbait over the 8 to 10-foot flats and painstakingly dead stick it for up to 30 seconds at a time until a bass would “tick” the bait. At that point I would not set the hook, rather reel up the slack line and apply pressure to the fish. In conjunction with the Pointer, I used a white Gambler Super Stud (a soft plastic jerkbait) as a follow-up lure when smallmouth would give chase to the jerkbait but not bite. The Super Stud put two additional fish in the boat.

Jerkbait Rig: Rogue Rods Magnum Bass MB664C with 15 lb P-Line Floroclear and Lucky Craft Pointer 100.

Super Stud Rig: Rogue Rods Magnum Bass MB664C with 15 lb P-Line Floroclear and white Gambler Super Stud.
