Bass Fishing Report; Rend Lake; Sep. 16, 2006

Weather:  Sunny and mid to high 80’s with a 10 mph wind from the west
Water:  Temperature in the low 80’s and stained on the north end and clear on the south

I fished a Bass World Sports tournament on Rend Lake with a good friend Jason Thomas.

We went about as far north as you could go on the Muddy side and worked our way back towards the main lake.  We concentrated our efforts on shallow brush and laydowns.  We fished a chartreuse and white strikeking spinnerbait and green pumpkin senko at first but that didn’t work on the first bank we fished.  We turned around for a second pass and Jason threw a chartreuse and white strikeking crank bait and I went to my black and blue strike king jig.  Jason had one roll on his crank bait on a lay down and misses it.  He made another cast and nothing.  I made a pitch and caught a nice 2 ½ at about 8 am.  At about 8:30, I lose one about 2 ½ pounds off another lay down.  We then started working the banks back toward the main lake and around 9 we came up to a stump and Jason makes 2 casts with a spinner bait and nothing.  I make a pitch in to it and catch a 3lb plus on my jig.  We fish for another hour and come to this big tree.  Jason makes several pitches with his tube and I make the same with my jig.  I make 1 more pitch to a stump in the middle of the lay down and one nails it.  I catch a 3 1/2, and while I am retying, Jason sets the hook and catches a 2lber off a stump with a tube.  So at 10am we double our weight and have about 10 ½ in the boat.  We need a kicker to win.

We keep going and it is about noon now. We get to our stopping point in the north area and we trying to make up our decision to either stay north or run the same pattern south.  As we are talking about it we are hitting this lay down.  I make my 3rd or 4th pitch into the area with my jig and there he is.  I set the hook and he starts to come out and gets hung on the end of the lay down.  He is just flopping at the surface as we go to it.  As we go, it comes out and Jason scoops it up.  It is a 2 ½ to 3lber.  That was our bag for the day.  We did retrace our steps and catch 2 more keepers on the same tube and jig that don’t help.  We do make a run to south end of lake to hit a set of brush piles but nothing.

We ended up winning the event with a 13.29 pound bag.  The top three weights were over 10 ½ pounds.  Shallow water with wood or weeds seemed to be the key for all the teams in the top five.  The jig and tube was our main baits but another team noted spinner baits and flukes as their key baits.
