Bass Fishing Report; Patoka Lake; 5-26-07

Weather:           Sunny, 85 degrees, Light Wind
Water:               Clear, 77 degrees, 1 foot below summer pool

I went to Patoka Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.  In an effort to save gas and also to stay away from the pleasure boats as much as possible, I put in at Walls ramp and stayed in the idle zone all day.  Things started off good with 4 keepers and several short fish in the first hour.  3 keepers came on a pop-r and one on a buzzbait along a sparse weedline in about 5 feet of water.  I stayed with topwater for another hour and caught maybe one or two more short fish.  I have been reading a lot about the shad spawn that has been going on during many of the recent professional tournaments, and I think I was benefiting a little from that.  The areas I caught fish early had shad spawning on the rocks along the bank in just a few inches of water.  I noticed that about the time I stopped catching fish in the morning, the shad activity had also stopped.  Once the sun got up high, I went on up the river until the water started to get some stain to it.  I flipped, cranked and spinnerbaited for 5 more hours and caught one keeper and one short fish on a brush hog.  My 5 keepers would have probably weighed 12-13 lbs, with my biggest fish around 3 lbs.
