Bass Fishing Report; Patoka Lake; 3-10-07

Weather: Cloudy in the morning, sunny after noon, 60 degrees
Wind:
North, 10mph
Water: Clear, Main lake clear, creeks stained, 42-47 degrees
Level: 4 ft above winter pool

Finally a pleasant day to be on the water.  Unfortunately, the fishing was not very pleasant.  In 5 hours I caught 3 bass – a short fish, a 2 pounder and a 6 pounder.  All of them came on a suspending jerkbait in standing timber.  I also threw a lipless crankbait, jig, and medium diving crankbait.

The fishing seems to be starting off slow this year.  I suspect it has something to do with the lake freezing over completely this winter (a lot of years it does not freeze).  The weather has been good the last week with highs in the 60’s and a lot of sun.  This has caused some shad to move into the backs of the creeks, but not a lot, and I don’t think the bass have followed them back yet.

Most people I have talked to say they are having a hard time catching fish at Patoka right now.  There are several big tournaments coming up in the next few weeks, so we will see who is really telling the truth then.
