Bass Fishing Report; Patoka Lake ; 9/30-10/1, 2006

Weather:           Overcast, light rain, 65 degrees, South wind 10 mph
Water:               Clear, 68 degrees, 3.5 ft above normal pool

Unfortunately, Patoka is not fishing like its usual self right now.  Normally this time of year, the fish would be relating to the shallow, matted grass and hitting buzzbaits, frogs, and spinnerbaits on a day like this.  However, we had a huge amount of rain last week and the lake came up several feet.  The grass that would normally be matted or very near the surface is now under 2-3 feet of water.  I think a lot of the grass that was matted has broken up and washed away from the rapidly rising water.

I was not able to get bit on any of the usual baits I mentioned.  The only way I could catch anything was to swim a black jig over the remaining grass in about 6 feet of water.  I caught several short fish, one 3 1/2 lb keeper and one 2 lb keeper all on the black jig.

Patoka Lake Report Sunday October 1, 2006

Weather:           Sunny, 75 degrees, Light wind
Water:               Light stain, 67 degrees, 3.5 ft above normal pool

I was not happy about not catching much yesterday, so I went back to Patoka for a few hours today to try to redeem myself.  I fished the back of a major creek to try to find some dirtier water, but it was still fairly clear all the way to the back.  I only caught one keeper about 2 ½ lbs and one short fish.  Both fish hit a brown ¼ oz jig flipped to wood in 5 feet of water.  There were a lot of shad on the flat in the back of the creek, but I could not get bit on a spinnerbait or rattle trap.  I suspect it will be tough fishing for the guys fishing the Northern Skeeter Owners Tournament this coming weekend.  The weather forecast is for mostly sunny conditions both days.
