I fished the Indiana Bass Federation (TBF) District 10 Top 8 tournament Saturday and Sunday May 5-6 out of Rocky Point.  The river has been high for quite a while, but it is slowly coming down.  The water level is fluctuating slightly from day to day, so it is hard to find a consistent pattern that will last for very long.  Also, a lot of the fish are on beds right now, especially up river from Rocky Point. I believe some have already spawned and are in a post spawn mode, mainly in the creeks on the lower end of the pool where the water level has been more stable.  Despite all of that, the weigh-in was pretty good.  The two day individual winning weight was 10 fish – 20 lbs.  The winning 8 person team had 68 lbs for two days.  It took 11 lbs to qualify for the state finals (top 14 individuals).  I finished 4th with 10 fish – 14 lbs.  My club, Southern Indiana Bassaholics, finished second with 66 lbs.  Two other members of my club, Ron Nale and Randy Coffman, also qualified for the state finals.

All but two of my keepers came on a shallow diving crankbait around stumps on the edge of a creek channel.  I started far up river on Saturday and caught two small keepers flipping.  When I started seeing fish locked on beds, I decided it was time for me to leave.  I can catch spawning fish most places, but Ohio River fish are extremely difficult to catch when they are on beds.  I tried to catch a couple of the 3 to 4 pound fish I saw, but I have fished for these kinds of fish in the past and I knew that it was probably a waste of time.  I ran back down river where I believed some of the fish would be post spawn and caught 3 keepers on a crankbait and finished out my limit in 45 minutes.  Sunday I went back to where I ended the day before and caught 4 keepers on the same crankbait, but I had to leave early because I was having motor problems.  I caught my 5th keeper near the ramp on the same crankbait.
