Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; Sep. 7, 2006
Bass Buster Guide Service

Kentucky Lake :
Water Level at Ky Dam - 355.99
Surface Temperature - 79

Lake Barkley :
Water Level at Barkley Dam - 356.30
Surface Temperature - 79

Both lakes are 3 ft below summer pool.  A series of upper level lows moving over the lakes area over the holiday weekend resulted in some very good reports on the bass fishing.  I received a number of reports of  good bass being taken over the weekend on a myriad of patterns.  Of course as is normal after low pressure comes high pressure so the bass fishing for the past few days has been somewhat slow.  I would expect this to improve as we move toward to the next weather system which is due here late this coming weekend.  The cooler fall like weather has continued in the area and the cooler temperatures have dropped the water temperatures another 4 degrees since last Thursday.  We are now in the water temperature range that we normally start seeing the shad staging near the mouths of the creeks and bays prior to moving into the shallow water for the fall feed.  If these water temperatures hold we should see more and more fish being taken from around the mouths of the bays over the next week.

Largemouth Bass:  The Largemouth Bass are being taken on the ledges and humps on the main lakes and also around the mouths of the deeper bays.  These fish are being taken on Carolina rigged large worms and lizards and large and small creature baits as well as on jigs.  Although the high pressure slowed down the early morning and late evening topwater bite in shallow water in the bays I would expect this bite to pick up over the next few days.  Largemouth are being taken this week in shallow water, especially near vegatation early and late in the day on deadsticked worms.

Smallmouth Bass:  The Smallmouth Bass are being taken on main lake river ledges on Carolina rigged creature baits and jigs.  I had a couple of reports of some numbers of Smallmouth still being taken at night on the LBL side of Ky Lake on spinnerbaits and jigs.

Some of the productive lures reported this week are:  Lucky Craft Sammy in ghost pearl lemon, Zoom horney toad in white, Yamamoto senko in watermelon/red/green, Hook Some Bass tubes in chameleon craw, Zoom magnum lizards in green pumpkin.

Note:  We are rapidly approaching the transition time for the fish to transition from summer patterns to fall patterns.  How fast and soon this will happen will depend on water temperatures.  Water temperatures right now are a little below normal for this time of September...if the water temperatures keep dropping we will see and early fall bite...if they go back up the transition period will most likely extend to around the end of the month.  During the transition period bass fishing normally gets tough for a week or so...the savvy bass angler needs to monitor the water temperature changes daily and adjust locations from shallow to deep as needed.

Later this month we will start seeing a lot of big end of year bass tournaments here on the lakes.  I would like to welcome all of you folks coming to fish our lakes.  I am sure you will find a lot of good Kentucky hospitality here from the good folks in the lakes area.  I would like to recommend that if you have any problems with your boat or need any boating equipment that you check out the fine folks at Jet-A-Marina located on U.S. 62 in Calvert City just north of Ky Dam.  These folks have taken care of me and my clients for years and do an excellent job.  For those of you that are looking for some good selections of fishing lures and tackle, let me suggest you drop in at The Cabin Bait and Tackle located on U.S. 62 just west of Kuttawa.  You will find a lot of top line lures there as well as many of the local favorite custom lures you cannot get back home.

If you are in need of a guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction don't hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email.  You should be making your reservations now for the fall fishing.  October and November can provide some of the best bass fishing of the year here on Ky/Barkley.

I have the following dates available for booking in October:

Oct:  7, 12, 13, 14, 22, 24, 27, 29, 30, 31

I have numerous dates available in November.
