Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; Sep. 21, 2006
Bass Buster Guide Service

Kentucky Lake :
Water Level at Ky Dam - 355.50
Surface Temperature - 75

Lake Barkley :
Water Level at Barkley Dam - 355.50
Surface Temperature - 75

Both lakes are 3.5 feet below summer pool.  As predicted in last week's report the below seasonal temperatures we experienced this week has the shad transitioning to the creeks and bays.  More and more of the shad schools have been showing up in the creeks and bays each day this week.  As per usual during the fall transition of the shad the bass are scattered from the mouths of the creeks and bays to the shallows.  We have another approaching cold front which will pass through the lakes area sometime Saturday.  High winds are forecasted for tomorrow and Saturday from a southernly direction so the lakes will be very rough and anglers that venture on the lakes are urged to be cautious.

Largemouth Bass:  Largemouth are being taken on the humps and ledges around the mouths of the bays, on mainlake primary points and the secondary points in the bays and on the shallow flats in the bays.  The fish are scattered with the transition from summer to fall patterns.  A very good topwater bite has been present this week on cloudy days early in the morning and late in the evening and lasting sometimes well into the day.  The deeper ledge fish are being taken on deep running crankbaits, Carolina rigged creature baits and jigs.  The mid range fish on the secondary points in the bays are being taken on topwater lures, crankbaits, tube jigs and jigs.  The shallow fish are being taken on topwater lures, spinnerbaits, shallow jerkbaits and deadstick worms.

Smallmouth Bass:  The Smallmouth Bass are being taken on main lake primary point and secondary points in the bays as well as on river ledges.  These fish are being taken on Carolina rigged creature baits, crankbaits and jigs.  Some Smallmouth are being taken early and late in the day on the flats in shallow water on topwater lures.

Some of the more productive lures this week are reported as:  Lucky Craft Sammy in ghost pearl lemon, Zara spook in white and shad patterns, Lucky Craft G Splash in ghost pearl lemon, Rebel Pop R in black/chrome, Zoom horny toads in white and green pumpkin swirl, Zoom super flukes in white, Hook Some Bass spinnerbaits in blue glimmer, Bandit crankbaits in rootbeer, Lewis rattletraps in blue chrome and smokey joe, Hook Some Bass tubes in green pumpkin and chameleon craw, Strike King bitsy flip jigs in green pumpkin craw, Net Baits baby paca craw in summer craw and Yamamoto senko on watermelon/red/green.

The transition to fall patterns is in full swing.  We should be in full blown fall fishing pattern within the next week or ten days if the present weather patterns continue.  If you have not already made your plans for your fall fishing trips you should do so now...fall fishing give you some great fishing experiences.

If you are in need of a guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction don't hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email.  I have the following dates available for booking in October and November:

October:  12, 29 and 30

November:  I have plenty of dates in November...and November can be some of the best of fall fishing.

Later this month we will start seeing a lot of big end of year bass tournaments here on the lakes.  I would like to welcome all of you folks coming to fish our lakes.  I am sure you will find a lot of good Kentucky hospitality here from the good folks in the lakes area.  I would like to recommend that if you have any problems with your boat or need any boating equipment that you check out the fine folks at Jet-A-Marina located on U.S. 62 in Calvert City just north of Ky Dam.  These folks have taken care of me and my clients for years and do an excellent job.  For those of you that are looking for some good selections of fishing lures and tackle, let me suggest you drop in at The Cabin Bait and Tackle located on U.S. 62 just west of Kuttawa.  You will find a lot of top line lures there as well as many of the local favorite custom lures you cannot get back home.
