Bass
Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 9/20/2007
Both
lakes are 3 ft below summer pool with little fluctuation. Well the
nice cooling period we had last week ended this week and we have had
temperatures back in the lower 90's and flat water all week. The
bass fishing has been overall slow this past week. Some fish are
being taken but not any big numbers. An example of that would be
the two big tournaments held here this past weekend. The Illinois
Team Trail Classic was won with a little over 12lbs a day average and
the BASS Weekend Series two day tournament was won with a little over
13lbs a day average (second place was 9lbs a day average). On the
pro side of the BASS tournament the anglers averaged only 3 fish per
participant for two days fishing. I hate writing a report of slow
bass fishing but these numbers are fact. Now for the good news:
We will have this warm weather and flat water through the weekend
according to the weather forecast, but early next week we are supposed
to cool back down to low 80's during the day and rain is in the forecast
for early next week. This should drop the water temperatures a
little more and move more shad and thus bass toward the shallows.
As far as the bite we are experiencing right now, it is not any
different than I have seen during the years here during the early stages
of the fall transition. There are a myriad of patterns to fish
from the ledges to the shallows...none of them on fire...the best advice
I can give you is to pick your pattern and beat it to death with
patience. Largemouth
Bass: Largemouth are being taken on the main lake primary points
and ledges around the mouths of the bays. The fish on the points
are taking crankbaits, spinnerbaits and Smallmouth
Bass: Smallmouth Bass are being taken on main lake primary points
and secondary points early and late in the day on crankbaits and
tubejigs. Some
of the productive lures this week are: Fat Jack's Bubber Frog in
watermelon/red, Lucky Craft Sammy in ghost pearl lemon, Hook Some Bass
spinnerbaits in blue glimmer, Lewis rattletraps in blue/chrome, Strike
King Red Eye Shad in black/chrome, Hook Some Bass baby brush
hounds in watermelon/purple, Charmer 10.5 " paddle tail worm in
plum, Hook Some Bass tubes in smoke/purple and Last Cast finesse jigs in
peanut butter jelly. We
would like to welcome the bass anglers coming into town over the next 6
weeks to fish in the regional and end of year classic tournaments.
Please take time to study your maps and get familiar with the water you
will be running. These lakes can be a lot of fun but they can also
be dangerous if you think you can run just anywhere....follow your buoy
markers and if you are not sure of the water depth changes where you
are, lay the boat down until you get orientated. I would like to
recommend that you visit The Cabin Bait and Tackle located on U.S. 62
just west of Kuttawa for your bass fishing needs....there you will
find a great selection of name brand and local custom type lures as well
as a sales staff that knows bass fishing. If you need assistance
with your boat or motor you should visit Jet-A-Marina located in If
you are in need of a bass guide (I only guide for bass) for some fun
bass fishing, tournament preparation, lake familiarization or technique
instruction don't hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email.
If I am booked up I will be happy to make a recommendation for another
service. Here
are the dates I have open for booking in September, October and
November: September:
26 (late cancellation: this date now available) October:
1, 16, 17, 18, 19 November:
Plenty of dates available...November is normally some of the best fall
fishing. Captain.
