Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 8/2/2007
Bass Buster Guide Service

Kentucky Lake :
Water Level at Ky Dam - 357.02  Surface Temperature - 85

Lake Barkley :
Water Level at Barkley Dam - 357.02  Surface Temperature - 85

Both lakes are two feet below summer pool.  Well the hot dog days of deep summer finally arrived early this week and we have been having some very hot days and flat water.  Afternoon temperatures are in the 90's and without any current or wind to stir up the fish the bite has slowed down.  The shallow bass bite that was very good last week is slow this week.  The best bet right now is to fish the ledges and be patient.  Take plenty of water with you and drink it because the temperatures in the forecast are only going to go up with daytime highs nearing 100  early next week which will put the heat indexes well over 100.

Largemouth Bass:  Largemouth are being taken on the ledges on the main lakes and around the mouths of the bays.  These fish are being taken on Carolina rigged creature baits and large worms as well as jigs.  Some fish are being taken shallow near vegetation especially early and late in the day on spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and Texas rigged worms fished over the submerged grass and frogs fished on the matted grass.

Smallmouth Bass:  Some Smallmouth are being taken on the deep river ledges on Carolina rigged creature baits and on jigs.  The early morning shallow water bite we normally see on Smallmouth around the grass beds this time of year has been virtually non existent.  The reported night bite has indicated some fish are being taken but it is slow on tubes and jigs.

Some productive lures this week were:  Spro frogs in white and green.  Hook Some Bass vibe (chatterbait type lure) in white and blue glimmer, Hook Some Bass spinnerbait in blue glimmer, Charmer 10.5 inch worm in fire and ice, Hook Some Bass tubes in smoke purple and D&L jigs in Cumberland Craw.

I am getting a lot of inquiries from the bass anglers from out of town making plans to come in for the fall bass tournaments.  Now is definitely the time to get your plans made and make your reservations for lodging and guides if you have not done so.  For those anglers coming into town you should make sure you go by The Cabin Bait and Tackle located on U.S. 62 just west of Kuttawa for the best in tackle selection of quality lures and equipment.  You also need to know that Jet-a-Marina in Calvert City on U.S. 62 just east of Ky Dam provides top notch repair service, low oil prices and a great selection of Ranger and Stratos boats along with your needed boat accessories.

FLASH:  Check out the bass tournament and auction being held at Paris on August 18th to benefit Chris Hamilton who was paralyzed in swimming accident this past month.  The list of items to be auctioned is getting huge with items such as trips with some of the world's best tournament anglers, notable hunting and fishing guides, gobs of top notch fishing equipment and just too much to mention here.  You do not have to fish the tournament to attend the auction but the tournament appears as though it will be a big event.  You can check this out at www.helpchrishamiliton.com

If you are in need of a bass guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction don't hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email.  Right now is a great time to take that lake familiarization trip to learn the lakes and how to eliminate water to find your bass during the different seasons.  Learning how to find and fish the ledges is included in this trip.

I have the following dates available for booking in August, September and October:
