Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 8/16/2007
Bass Buster Guide Service

Kentucky Lake :
Water Level at Ky Dam - 356.92  Surface Temperature - 87

Lake Barkley
Water Level at Barkley Dam - 357.05  Surface Temperature - 88

Both lakes are two feet below summer pool.  Well I thought it was hot last week but this week proved to be even hotter with record temperatures just about every day this week.  The weather forecast for the weekend looks a little better as does next week with high temperatures in the mid 90's instead of the triple digits we have had this week.  Of course when I wrote my report last week, the forecast was for temperatures in the 90's and then the forecast was changed two days later to indicate the high temperatures we had this week...all we can do is cross our fingers I guess as that seems to be what the weather guessers are doing.  The bite was somewhat slower on the Largemouth this week as far as the shallow water bite.  We did catch some fish but they were of less number and quality.  The ledges this week was a matter of being on the ledges when there was some current being generated.  We did manage some nice fish off the ledges a couple of days this week. I did not receive many reports from other anglers this week as most people are avoiding the heat.  Overall I would say the Largemouth fishing was slow to fair and the weather was just plain hot.

Largemouth Bass:  Largemouth are being taken on ledges on the main lake and around the mouths of the bays on Carolina rigged creature baits and large worms and jigs.  Largemouth are also being taken on the flats in the creeks and bays around grass beds and wood cover early and late in the day on topwater lures, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits and Texas rigged creature baits and worms.  The topwater bite is there but nearly as good as one would expect this time of year, more fish are being taken subsurface than on top.

Smallmouth Bass:  A few Smallmouth are being taken early and late in the day on main lake points on crankbaits and jigs.  Some Smallmouth are being taken on the river ledges on Carolina rigged creature baits and jigs.  The Smallmouth bite is slow.

Some of the productive lures reported this week are:  Yozuri Pop n Splash in ghost lemon, Hook Some Bass chatterbaits in blue glimmer, Hook Some Bass spinnerbaits in blue glimmer, Zoom brush hogs in watermelon/candy and junebug, Hook Some Bass baby brush hounds in watermelon/purple and watermelon/red, Charmer worms in fire and ice, Hook Some Bass jigs in pepper/pumpkin/green and Jewel jigs in green pumpkin.

FLASH:  Reminder that the benefit tournament and auction to assist Chris Hamilton will be held at Paris Landing this Saturday the 18th.  Chris, an avid outdoorsman from the area was paralyzed in an accident recently and the tournament and auction are being held to assist with his medical bills and family.  Many nationally and regionally known professional anglers and hunters have donated guided trips, equipment, memorabilia etc to be auctioned at a dinner just after the tournament on Saturday.  The list of items is huge and eye opening so if you have not made plans to attend you need to check it out and make plans to attend.  More information can be found at www.helpchrishamilton.com .

Update:  As many folks know, I put a new Evinrude ETEC HO on my boat about 8 weeks ago.  I have had a lot of folks asking me how I like the engine and how it is performing so I thought that since I have now gotten some hours on this engine I would do a follow-up and let everyone know how the engine is working out.  I have had absolutely no (and I mean zero) problems out of this engine.  I am still amazed at how quiet the engine is and how much power this engine displays.  The low and midrange pickup is great and the gas mileage is even greater.  Keep in mind that I put more hours on an engine in a month than most folks do in a year or two.  I have no reservations in recommending this engine to anyone in the market for a new boat or just a new motor.  You can see these engines locally here at Jet-A-Marine located in Calvert City on U.S. 62 just a couple miles west of Ky Dam.

If you are in need of a bass guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction, don't hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email.  If you have not made your fall reservations for your fall fishing trips yet, you need to do so soon or you may not be able to get the date(s) you want.
