Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 7/5/2007

Kentucky Lake :  
Water Level at Ky Dam - 358.40  Surface Temperature - 83

Lake Barkley :  
Water Level at Barkley Dam - 358.35  Surface Temperature - 83

Both lakes are about one foot below summer pool.  Hot days and afternoon thunderstorms has been the scenario this past week.  The weekend forecast is calling for sunny skies and only a small chance of precipitation.  The lakes are busy with holiday traffic this week so be careful and drive defensively both on and off the water.  Heat indexes are climbing during the day now so make sure you take plenty of water with you.

Largemouth Bass:  The Largemouth are being taken on the ledges on the main lake and around the mouths of the deeper bays.  These fish are being taken on Carolina rigged creature baits and large worms, shaky head with both large worms and finesse worms and jigs.  Largemouth are also being taken early and late in the day in shallow water as they are feeding on schools of fry.  These fish are being taken on topwater lures,  Texas rigged creature baits and tubes, deadstick lures, soft jerkbaits and soft frogs fished near vegetation and wood cover. 

Smallmouth Bass:  The Smallmouth Bass are somewhat slow during the day but some are being taken on main lake shorelines and points early and late in the day on topwater lures, crankbaits, tube jigs and jigs.  The night bite is reported to be fair with fish being taken on large dark colored spinnerbaits, crankbaits, tube jigs and jigs fished on main lake points. 

Some of the productive lures reported this week are:  Lucky Craft Sammy in ghost pearl lemon, Rebel Pop R in black/chrome, Lucky Craft G Splash in ghost pearl lemon, buzzbaits in white, Zoom Horny Toads in watermelon/red pear, Zoom super flukes in shad patterns, Slong' Poison Head Shake It's rigged with Charmer large worms in plum and Gambler large worms in peppergrass, Hook Some Bass baby brush hounds in watermelon/purple, Zoom brush hogs in watermelon/candy and junebug, Hook Some Bass tubes in chameleon craw and green pumpkin, and D&L jigs in black/blue and cumberland craw.

If you are in need of a guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament preparation or lake familiarization don't hesitate to call me or drop me an email.  Now is the time to make your fall bookings to get the date(s) you want.  I have been doing a lot of teaching trips lately on how to find and fish the ledges...this is the time to learn if you need help in this area.  We still have 3 more months in which ledge fishing will be the dominate Largemouth pattern here on the lakes.  I am offering split day trips during the months of July and August.  These trips consist of 4 hours morning fishing followed by 4 hours of fishing during the late evening.  Contact me for information and rates for these split day trips.
