Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 7/19/2007
Bass Buster Guide Service

Kentucky Lake :
Water level at Ky Dam - 357.43  Surface Temperature - 85

Lake Barkley :
Water Level at Barkley Dam - 357.75  Surface Temperature - 85

Both lakes are about 1.5 ft below summer pool.  We have had hot days this week with afternoon heat indexes around 100 degrees.  A cold front is moving through the area this evening and the forecast for the weekend is calling for highs in the mid 80's and lower humidity readings which should make for a nice weekend on the lakes.  The reports I have received this week on the Largemouth Bass bite have ranged from slow to fair on both lakes with the ledges having produced most of the fish.  I would say my experiences on the lakes this week would reflect the same.

Largemouth Bass:  Largemouth are being taken on the ledges on the main lake and around the mouths of the bays.  These summertime deep fish are being taken on Carolina rigged creature baits and large worms, jigs (dragged) and large Texas rigged worms.  Some schooling bass are showing up on some ledges here and there but not with any consistency.  These schooling fish can be taken on crankbaits and swimming jigs so one should keep one of these handy when fishing the ledges in case the opportunity presents itself.  Some Largemouth are being taken shallow early and late in the day around vegetation and wood cover as they are feeding on schools of fry.  These fish can be taken by fishing frog imitations on the matted grass, some topwater over the flooded over grass and spinnerbaits just off the grass around wood cover.

Smallmouth Bass:  Some Smallmouth are being taken on the deep river ledges during the day on Carolina rigged small creature baits and jigs but are few in number from reports.  I myself am getting only one here and there with no experiences with schools during the day.  The reports I received on the night time Smallmouth bite this week would indicate a slow bite overall.  Some single Smallmouth are being taken around the grass beds in the bays early and late in the day but it is single fish and not the schools that one would expect this time of year.

Some of the productive lures this week have been:  Yozuri Pop N Splash in lemon/ghost, Rapala DT 16 in parrot, Zoom Brush hog in watermelon candy,  Zoom ol Monster worm in plum, Hook Some Bass brush hound on watermelon/purple, Last Cast finesse jig in green pumpkin and peanut butter jelly, PJ's football head jig in green pumpkin and Slong's swimming jig in black/blue.

FLASH:  A benefit bass tournament and auction are being organized for Chris Hamilton, a popular young outdoorsman from Paris , Tn that was tragically injured in a swimming accident in Florida recently.  Chris' injuries has him paralyzed from the chest down and he is in ICU in Florida .  Due to a lack of health insurance many of Chris's friends have undertaken these fundraisers to assist with the medical bills.  Actually at the current time there is not enough funds available to fly Chris home by air ambulance to be with his family.  Currently the amount of out pouring from many hunting and fishing personalities and organizations is probably unparalleled as far as anyone can remember.  Hunting and fishing trips with some of the world's top outdoor professionals will be auctioned as well as top of the line hunting and fishing equipment to assist in offsetting Chris' expenses.  The following website has been established with information regarding Chris' condition with information about the upcoming bass tournament and auction:  www.helpchrishamilton.com .  I urge you to visit this website and participate in the tournament as well as the auction..check it out and see some of the big name persons that you can win a guided hunting and fishing trip with at the auction.

If you are in need of a bass guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction don't hesitate to drop me an email or give me a call.  Now is the time to book your dates for your fall fishing trips, don't wait too late or you may not get the date(s) you desire.  This is a great time to learn how to find and fish the ledges.
