Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 7/12/2007
Bass Buster Guide Service

Kentucky Lake :
Water Level at Ky Dam - 357.84   Surface Temperature - 84

Lake Barkley :
Water Level at Barkley Dam - 358.10  Surface Temperature - 85

Both lakes are one foot below summer pool.  The lake levels are currently back on track with seasonal levels since they are normally drawn down one foot below summer pool during the first week of July, however we may see the lakes dropped below normal again if there is not a big influx of water in the Tennessee Valley.  According to the TVA the period between January and May this year the Tennessee Valley received the least amount of rainfall it has received during that period in the past 118 years.  The TVA indicates that short of a heavy influx of rainfall such as that which would accompany the remnants of a hurricane that TVA lake levels could be expected to be lower than normal due to their having to move some water through the system to ensure water quality.  So far from a bass fishing standpoint I have noticed the bite a bit slower on the ledges on north Kentucky Lake over the past week or so but the ledge bite on Barkley seems to be holding up.  There are also a lot of fry schools in the  creeks and bays that are providing some fair shallow water fishing on both lakes.

Largemouth Bass:  The Largemouth Bass are being taken on the main lake ledges and the ledges near the mouths of the creeks and bays.  These fish are being taken on Carolina rigged large worms and creature baits, jigs (both dragged and slack lined) and shaky head worms.  Largemouth are also being taken in the creeks and bays as they are feeding on schools of fry near wood cover and vegetation.  These fish are being taken on topwater lures early and late in the day, frogs over matted grass during the day as well as on finesse jigs and tube jigs fished near wood cover on lead out banks and secondary points.

Smallmouth Bass:  The Smallmouth Bass are being taken on main lake points early and late in the day on jigs and tube jigs.  The night bite on Smallmouth Bass is reported to be fair on main lake points on crankbaits, tube jigs and jigs.

Some of the productive lures reported this week are:  Zoom horny toads in watermelon red pearl and green pumpkin pearl, Yozuri Pop n Splash in ghost lemon pattern, Zoom brush hogs in watermelon/candy, Hook Some Bass brush hounds in watermelon/purple, Zoom trick worms in green pumpkin (on shaky head), Hook Some Bass tubes in smoke purple, Last Cast finesse jigs in green pumpkin and peanut butter jelly and Jewel  football head jigs in green pumpkin.

If you are in need of a guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction don't hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email.  Now is the time to learn how to find and fish the ledges.  You should be making your reservations for your fall fishing trips now to ensure you can get the date(s) you desire.
