Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 6/28/2007

Kentucky Lake :  
Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 358.20  Surface Temperature - 83

Lake Barkley :  
Water Level at Barkley Dam - 358.45  Surface Temperature - 83

Both lakes are close to one foot below summer pool.  We have had some hot humid weather this week with a lot of isolated afternoon thunderstorms here in the lakes area.  Some of these thunderstorms have been severe with high winds and a lot of lightning.  These storms are forecasted to be with us through Saturday so keep an eye on the sky and if it looks threatening you should find a safe haven until the storms have passed.  The Largemouth fishing has been overall good this week.  I have received a number of reports that the night Smallmouth fishing is picking up also. 

Largemouth Bass:  The Largemouth are being taken on the ledges on the main lake and around the mouths of the bays.  These summertime deep fish are being taken on deep running crankbaits, Carolina rigged creature baits and large worms, shaky head jigs with large worms and by slack lining and dragging jigs.  Largemouth are also being taken early in the day and late in the evening around grass beds and wood cover in shallow water on topwater lures, spinnerbaits and frog lures.   

Smallmouth Bass:  The Smallmouth Bass are being taken on deep river ledges on Carolina rigged creature baits and slack lined jigs.  Smallmouth are also being taken early and late in the day on main lake points on topwater lures, jigs and tube jigs.  The night feeding Smallmouth are being taken on crankbaits, spinnerbaits and tube jigs fished on main lake points. 

Some of the productive lures reported this week are:  Lucky Craft sammy in ghost pearl lemon, Lucky Craft G-splash in ghost pearl lemon, Yozuri pop n splash with lemon back and ghost belly, Chatterbuzz buzzbaits in white and black, Zoom horny toad in watermelon/red pearl and white, Zoom brush hog in watermelon candy, River Bottom Get'sem in watermelon candy, Hook Some Bass brush hounds in watermelon/purple, Charmer Lures 10.5 inch plum worm fished both on Carolina rigs and Slong's poison head shake it, Rapala DT series lures in bluegill, Norman DD22 in rootbeer and baby bass, Hook Some Bass tubes in chameleon craw and D&L jigs in black/blue. 

I have had a number of inquiries about where one can find the Charmer Lures worms and the Slong's poison head shake it.  These items and many more custom lures such as the Hook Some Bass lures can be found at The Cabin Bait and Tackle located on U.S. 62 just west of Kuttawa (270-388-0122).

If you are in need of a guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction don't hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email.  It is best to call me during the evening as I am on the water every day.  I am offering split day trips (4 hours morning and 4 hours evening) during July and August for those that would rather not be out in the heat of the day in addition to my normal 5 and 8 hour day trips. 

If you have not made your reservations for your fall fishing trips you should do so very soon.  Now is a great time to learn how to find and fish the ledges.
