Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 5/17/2007
Bass Buster Guide Service

Kentucky Lake :
Water Level at Ky Dam - 359.03
Surface Temperature - 73

Lake Barkley :
Water Level at Barkley Dam - 359.30
Surface Temperature - 75

Both lakes are at summer pool.  Strong northerly winds from two cold fronts that came through the area over the past two days has kept most folks off the main lakes but the weekend forecast looks good wind wise with light winds in the forecast.  We are definitely into the early summer patterns now with Largemouth Bass in transition from spawn patterns to summer patterns and the Smallmouth Bass feeding early and late in the day on the main lake points.  The Bluegill, Shellcracker and Channel Catfish are still spawning and this should last another week or so.  The White Bass are starting to get active and schools are starting to show up on the main lake flats.

Largemouth Bass:  The Largemouth are being taken on post spawn patterns in the creeks and bay on creek channel banks and secondary points as well as creek channel ledges.  These post spawn fish are being taken on Carolina rigged worms and creature baits, jigs and crankbaits.  Some Largemouth are showing up on the deeper main lake ledges and are being taken on the same lures.  There are still some Largemouth shallow near the spawning areas although this is mostly the buck bass guarding the nests, some keeper size fish are still being taken.  These fish are taking topwater lures, jigs, Texas rigged creature baits and dead sticked worms.

Smallmouth Bass:  The Smallmouth Bass are being taken on the main lake rocky points and first secondary points in the bays especially early in the day and late in evening.  These fish are being taken on topwater lures, jigs and tube jigs.  I have not received any reports on the night Smallmouth fishing which is the prevailing summer pattern for these brown fighters but I suspect there is probably a pretty good night bite now.

Some of the productive lures this week are:  Lucky Craft Sammy in ghost lemon shad, Lucky Craft G-splash in ghost lemon shad, Rebel Pop R in shad patterns, Rapala DT series crankbaits in parrot and bluegill, Norman DD series crankbaits in tropical shad and rootbeer, Zoom trick worms in watermelon/red and watermelon/purple, Hook Some Bass brush hounds in watermelon seed, watermelon/red and watermelon/purple, Hook Some Bass spinnerbaits in blue glimmer and green glimmer, Berkley power worms in motor oil, Baby Paca Craws in green pumpkin and Last Cast jigs in green pumpkin.

If you are in need of a guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction don't hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email.  Now is a great time to plan that trip to learn how to fish the ledges.  I am offering a split day trip (4 hours morning and 4 hours evening) during July and August.  This is a great way to beat the heat and capitalize on the better fishing hours.  Contact me for rates and details.

I have the following dates available in May, June and July:

May:  Sorry I am booked up

June:  Sorry I am booked up

July:  2, 3, 5, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 19, 20, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31

If you have been on the water during the past week or so you may have noticed a number of ladies out there fishing out of bass boats. Most of these ladies are from the Women's Bassmaster Tour Trail and are here checking out the lake for their tournament in June.  This is the first time these ladies have had one of their trail tournaments here on N. Kentucky Lake in many years.  Take time out to say hello to these professional women anglers and make them welcome here on Kentucky/Barkley.
