Bass
Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 4/5/2007
Both
lakes are two feet over winter pool and should begin a slow rise to
summer pool within the next few days.
Well, we went from two weeks of record heat here in the lakes
area to now subnormal temperatures with the passage of a harsh cold
front on Tuesday evening. Morning
surface temperatures have dropped 2 degrees over the past 2 days and I
expect they will drop a few more degrees with the present forecast.
North winds and daytime highs in the 40's and night time lows in
the 20's is in the forecast for the next three days.
We had a very good Largemouth Bass bite going in shallow water
prior to the front but it has slowed some with the cold front passage.
I am still catching fish without much problem but you need to
change up your pattern and slow down your presentations.
Back off the flats where you were catching fish last week and
fish the lead in creek channel banks with slow moving presentations
until you find the fish. I
am finding the fish haven't moved out too far off the flats over the
past two days. My best
producers over the past two days has been finesse jigs, tube jigs and
shakey head worms. The Largemouth should return to a more active bite
with the return of warmer weather and stabilized water temperaters next
week. The Crappie have also slowed down with the frontal passage.
Actually, the Crappie bite had already slowed some over the past
weekend as the Black Crappie seemed to have passed the peak spawn for
them although some fair numbers were still being taken but they are
mostly males. The White
Crappie are hanging in brush piles and stake beds in 9-12 ft of water
off the spawning banks. I
would expect the White Crappie to move in to start spawning in numbers
as soon as the weather turns back to more normal April
temperatures..this is in the forecast for next week.
Largemouth
Bass: Prior to the cold
front Largemouth were being taken on the lead in creek channel banks and
secondary points as well as on the flats in the creeks and bays on
topwater lures, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, Texas
and Carolina rigged lizards, Shakey head worms and tube jigs.
Since the cold front passage (last two days) Largemouth are being
taken on creek channel banks and secondary points near the flats on
finesse jigs, shakey head worms, Texas rigged lizards and tube jigs. Smallmouth
Bass: The Smallmouth Bass
were primarily being taken on gravel banks in the bays on grubs, jigs
and tube jigs. The
Smallmouth Bass are mostly on the spawning beds.
I have not received any reports on the Smallmouth since the cold
frontal passage due to the high north winds on Ky Lake over the past two
days. Some
of the productive lures reported on the above patterns were:
Bandit crankbaits in rootbeer/chartreuse, Rapala shadraps in
black/silver, Zoom lizards in green pumpkin and pumpkin/chartreuse, Hook
Some Bass spinnebaits in blue glimmer, Berkley shakey head worms in
green pumpkin, Hook Some Bass tubes in green pumpkin, Hook Some Bass
grubs in smoke and Last Cast jigs in green pumpkin and missouri craw.
Crappie:
The Black Crappie have passed the peak spawn according to all the
reports I have received. Some
Blacks are still being taken in shallow water around wood cover and by
casting the banks with curly tail jigs and road runners.
Since the cold front passage the bite has dropped off
considerably according to everyone I talked to over past two days on the
water. The White Crappie are
staged for their spawn and are currently being taken around brush piles
in 9-12 ft of water. The
bite has been slow since the cold front passage on Tuesday.
