Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 4/26/2007
Bass Buster Guide Service

Kentucky Lake :
Water level at Ky Dam - 359.33
Surface Temperature - 62

Lake Barkley :
Water level at Barkley Dam - 359.50
Surface Temperature -62

Both lakes are about one half foot over summer pool.  We have had a lot of wind this week and some rain but the lakes are in pretty good shape.  There is some debris in the lakes, with Barkley having more visible debris than Kentucky Lake but this is normal with the waters having risen to summer pool last week.  The Largemouth Bass started moving into the brush and flowers late last week and every day there seems to be more and more of them showing up shallow but there are still some numbers of fish, especially the bigger females on the lead in channel banks off the spawning areas.  We have been averaging 25-35 bass per day this week despite a number of days with high winds keeping us from doing much moving around.  The Crappie bite seems to be a mystery from all the reports I am reading or getting over email.  All the reports pretty much agree that some of the White Crappie have spawned and that some are still yet to spawn but the bite seems to be scattered, by this I mean that the Crappie anglers are having to move from spot to spot to get any numbers of fish.  The reports indicate that they are getting one or two fish here and there on deep brush and on shallow brush and wood cover.  The key right now on the Crappie fishing success seems to be to run and gun from one brush pile or stake bed to the next so that over the course of the day you can end up with a respectable catch.

Largemouth Bass:  The Largemouth Bass are being taken in the creeks and bays near button brush and mustard flowers with a myriad of lures including Texas rigged lizards and creature baits, trick worms, jigs, spinnerbaits, shallow running crankbaits some topwater.  There are lots of smaller buck bass up shallow and some of the younger females are showing up shallow.  Although some of the larger females are being taken shallow, it seems the larger number of these fish are still holding along the lead in channel banks to the spawning areas.  These fish should be showing up shallow in numbers over the next few days.  The fish on the lead in banks are being taken on crankbaits, jigs, Texas and Carolina rigged lizards and creature baits and shakey head worms.

Smallmouth Bass:  The Smallmouth Bass activity seems to be picking up a little as the fish are recovering from their spawn.  I have had a number of reports of some Smallmouth being taken on secondary creek channel points near the mouths of the bays and on main lake primary and secondary points on crankbaits, jigs and even some early morning topwater.  The reports on these fish are somewhat few because everyone seems to be targeting the shallower more numerous Largemouth at this time.

Some of the productive lures reported this week are:  Chatterbuzz buzzbaits in black, Bandit crankbaits in rootbeer/chartreuse, Rapala DT flatsided series crankbaits in firetiger and bluegill, Zoom lizards in green pumpkin and watermelon/red, Zoom trick worms in watermelon/purple and watermelon/red, Hook Some Bass baby brush hounds in green pumpkin and watermelon/red, Last Cast jigs in green pumpkin and Missouri craw and Hook Some Bass spinnerbaits in blue glimmer.
