Bass
Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 4/12/2007
Both
lakes are about 2.5 ft below summer pool and on a slow rise. A
number of folks have asked me why the lakes are so low but the fact is
the lakes are exactly where they are supposed to be on the TVA River
Operating System Guide. I know we are all wanting to see the water
in the flowers and brush and it will happen soon...right on schedule it
appears. You can check the present lake levels vs the TVA
Operating System Guide on the TVA website. Just as
I expected in the last report the lake temperatures dropped a few more
degrees over the past week. The drop in water temperatures
seems to have leveled off now over the past few days. We have been
having a lot of wind out of the north lately in addition to the below
normal seasonal temperatures. The forecast for Saturday is calling
for cool temperatures in the low to mid 50's with heavy rains and
high winds. The forecast calls for a return to more seasonable
temperatures next week. The rapid drop in water temperatures
started taking its toll on the bite early this week and fishing has been
overall slower on Crappie and Bass but the fish are still biting...you
just have to be a little more patient and move around a little more.
We should see an improvement in the fishing over the next week if the
forecasted return to more normal temperatures holds and the forecasted
rise in the water levels. Largemouth
Bass: The Largmouth Bass are being taken in the creeks and bays on
creek channel banks and associated secondary points as well as on the
flats off the spawning flats. They are being taken on jigs, Smallmouth
Bass: I have not received many reports on the Smallmouth as the
wind has kept most folks from targeting them lately combined with the
fact that the Smallmouth are on spawning and early post spawn patterns.
I have received a few reports though of some Smallmouth being taken on Some
of the productive lures reported this week are: Hook Some Bass
spinnerbaits in blue glimmer, Lewis rattletraps in blue/chrome and
rootbeer, Last Cast jigs in green pumpkin and Crappie:
The Crappie have been slow from all the reports I have received over the
past week. Most of the reports indicate that the White Crappie are
still holding on deeper brush piles in 6-12 ft of water and are being
taken by casting curly tail jigs to the deeper brush and by vertically
fishing with small minnows and minnow/jig combinations. I have
gotten a few reports of scattered shallow crappie taking minnows and
small jigs fished under bobbers around brush and stake beds. With
the forecasted warming next week we should see an improvement in the
Crappie fishing. NOTE:
I had a problem with my email server early this week and lost a number
of emails over the past few days. If you emailed me and did not
receive a reply, your email was probably lost during the outage so
please email me again or give me a call. If
you are in need of a bass guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament
preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction don't
hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email. I have the
following dates available: April:
sorry I am booked up May:
sorry I am booked up June:
Available: 2, 3, 10, 17, 18, 23, 25, 29 I
have plenty of dates available in July and August. These are good months
for ledge fishing and fishing the grass beds. I
will not be doing night trips this summer as it is just getting to be
too much to try to do day and night trips. I will however be
offering split trips of morning and evening during July and August for
those of you that do not like the heat of the summer day. Contact
me for details if you would like a split day trip. Captain.
