Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 3/9/2007

Kentucky Lake :
Water Level at Ky Dam - 356.72  
Surface Temperature - 49

Lake Barkley :  
Water Level at Barkley Dam - 356.75  
Surface Temperature - 50

Both lakes are nearly 3 ft over winter pool.  Both lakes are forecasted to be pulled down .7 ft over the next 3 days.  Kentucky Lake is clear to slightly stained.  Lake Barkley is stained.  The water temperatures are rising nicely and with the forecast of highs in the 60's and 70's over the next 7 days with lows around 50 we should see some good early spring water temperatures very soon. 

Largemouth Bass:  The Largemouth Bass fishing this week has been good.  I have received a number of good reports of Largemouth catches. These fish are being taken on main lake primary and secondary points mostly with a few reports of fish being taken on secondary points and creek channel banks in the bays.  These fish are being taken with medium running crankbaits, suspending jerkbaits, blade baits,  jigs and shakey head worms. 

Smallmouth Bass:  The Smallmouth Bass fishing has been somewhat slow this week.  The reports I have received all indicated a single fish here and there  being taken on main lake primary and secondary pea gravel points on suspending jerkbaits.  I did find some nice Smallmouth today on a river channel ledges suspended around 17 ft in 25 ft of water.  I expect we will see more Smallmouth on the points within the next week as the water warms a little more. 

Some of the productive lures reported this week are:  Lucky Craft Pointer in aurora black and table rock shad, Rapala Xrap in black/silver, Rapala Shad Rap in crawdad,  Rattletraps in rootbeer, Wiggle Warts in crayfish patterns, Berkley Power Baits Shakey Head worm in green pumpkin, blade baits in chartruese, black/chartruese and silver and Last Cast jigs in green pumpkin. 

Product Report:  While I was doing seminars at the Indianapolis Boat, Sport and Travel Show, I was introduced to a small custom hand tied jig company named Last Cast Baits.  I was impressed with the obvious quality of these custom made hand tied jigs and brought a few home with me.  As you can see in my report above they are mentioned as being one of the productive lures for me this week.  Today was the first time I had a chance to try one of these jigs.  I picked one of their 1/4 oz Green Pumpkin finesse jigs and tipped it with a matching Tiny Paca Craw.  I only made 5 casts with this jig and had 3 fish off a brush pile.  I expect I will be ordering some more of these jigs very soon.  If you are interested in trying some of these jigs you can contact Last Cast Bait Co by calling 317-835-2068.  By the way, Ray Rigby, one of the best Smallie anglers in Indiana recommended these jigs to me...thanks Ray.

For those of you that are coming here to fish the tournaments this year or just coming to enjoy our great bass fishing for the fun of it, I would like to recommend that you stop by The Cabin Bait and Tackle located on U.S. 62 in Kuttawa and check out their great selection of name brand and custom lures.  This tackle shop has become one of the most popular stops for bass anglers since it opened a couple of years ago. This year they have expanded the store to include an even bigger selection.  Check it out, I don't think you will be disappointed that you did. 

Another business that you should keep in mind when visiting the lakes area here is Jet-A-Marina located on U.S. 62 in Calvert City .  Not only do they carry a great selection of Rangers, Stratos and other boats and boating accessories but their service department is second to none.  The folks at Jet-A-Marine have many times bent over backwards to keep my visiting clients on the water, not to mention the many times they have assisted me.
