Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 3/22/2007
Bass Buster Guide Service

Kentucky Lake :
Water level at Ky Dam - 355.47
Water Temperature - 54

Lake Barkley :
Water level at Barkley Dam - 355.80
Water Temperature - 54

Both lakes are about 1.5 ft over winter pool.  Both lakes levels have been fluctuating between present levels and .5 ft over winter pool every few days over the last couple of weeks.  We should see the lakes levels to start a slow rise toward summer pool sometime late next week.  The lake water temperatures dropped 5 degrees last weekend with the nasty cold front that came thru the area but are recovering daily with the abnormally high temperatures we have had this week accompanied by high southern winds.  I expect we will continue to see the lake temperatures rise over the next several days as the forecast is for more of this great warm March weather.  Overall the bite on the bass and crappie have been good this week as the waters are continuing to warm but high winds on some days have made it tough to effectively fish many areas.

Largemouth Bass:  Largemouth are being taken on the main lake primary and secondary points as well as on the secondary points and creek channel banks in the front portions of the creeks and bays.  These fish are primarily being taken on suspending jerkbaits, crankbaits, Carolina rigged lizards and shakey head worms.  There is also a good bite on the warmer days, especially in the late morning and lasting through late afternoon, on the shallow flats in the creeks and bays on lipless crankbaits.  On warmer days many of these shallow areas are warming into the high 50's and the shad are moving in to feed and a good number of the Largemouth are following them.

Smallmouth Bass:  Smallmouth Bass are being taken on the pea gravel points and first gravel points in the bays.  These fish are being taken on suspending jerkbaits, crankbaits and tube jigs.  Some good bags of Smallies have been taken over the past week on Kentucky Lake

Some of the productive lures this week are:  Lucky Craft pointers in black aurora, Rapala Xrap in black/silver, Smithwick Rogues in blue/chrome, Rapala Shadraps in crawdad and black/silver, Bandit crankbaits in rootbeer/chartruese, Lewis Rattletraps in blue/chrome, black/red and rootbeer, Hook Some Bass tubes in smoke/purple and Berkley shakey head worms in green pumpkin and watermelon/red.

News:  The Pelican Restaurant located on U.S. 62 in Lake City between Ky Dam and Barkley Dam is now open at 3:00 a.m. for those of you that want to have a good breakfast before getting on the water at first light.  No I am not sponsored by this restaurant and I don't get free food there, I just think it is great that anglers now have a place to get a great breakfast and still get on the water at first light.
