Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 3/15/2007
Bass Buster Guide Service

Kentucky Lake :
Water Level at Ky Dam - 354.94
Surface Temperature - 54

Lake Barkley :
Water Level at Ky Dam - 355.30
Surface Temperature - 55

Both lakes are one foot over winter pool.  The water temperatures came up fast this week with all the unseasonably warm weather.  The temperatures came up 5 degrees on both lakes over the past 7 days.  We had a nasty cold front move through the lakes area this morning and the temperatures dropped quite a bit and the cold north wind is blowing here today and tomorrow and forecasted to continue somewhat into Saturday.  The forecast shows a warming trend beginning on Sunday with warmer temperatures in the 60's next week.  Although the Largemouth Bass bite slowed a little after the cold frontal passage last Saturday night it picked back up again with the warming weather this week.  The reports I have received thus far this month indicated the better bite has been on Ky Lake overall but some late reports this week indicated that the bite was starting to pick up on Lake Barkley.

Largemouth Bass:  Largemouth Bass are being taken on main lake primary and secondary points on suspending jerkbaits, crankbaits, Carolina and Texas rigged lizards and tubes.  Largemouth are also being taken in small cuts on the main lake near deep water on crankbaits and shakey head worms.  The rapid rise in water temperatures this week moved a number of Largemouth into the creeks and bays to feed.  These fish are primarily being taken on secondary points and creek channel banks as well as on the shallow flats in the back of the bays.  These fish are being taken on medium running crankbaits and lipless crankbaits.

Smallmouth Bass:  The Smallmouth Bass bite has picked up some this week and reports indicate Smallmouth being taken on main lake pea gravel banks and points on deep diving suspending jerkbaits and slow rolled crankbaits.

Some of the productive lures reported this week are:  Lucky Craft Pointers in aurora black and table rock shad, Rapala Xrap in black/silver, Rapala Shadraps in crawdad and black/silver, Bandit crankbaits in rootbeer/chartruese, Wiggle Warts in crawfish patterns, Zoom lizards in green pumpkin, Berkley Shakey Head worms in green pumpkin and Lewis Rattletrap in blue/chrome and rootbeer.

News of Interest:  Here is something that I am sure is of interest to all the anglers that are fishing the north ends of the lakes.  The Pelican Restaurant located on U.S. 62 just east of Ky Dam is under new management and is now going to be opening for breakfast at 3:00 a.m.  The Pelican has long been a favorite place for anglers to have a good hot breakfast and now they will be open early enough so that you can get that early meal and be on the water at first light.  I know this will be good news for the anglers because it is hard to find any place near the lakes here that opens so that you can get breakfast and  still be on the water at safe light to catch the early bite.

If you are in need of a guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction don't hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email.  Here are the dates I have available for booking between now and the end of June:
