Bass
Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 11/9/2007
Both
lakes are two feet above winter pool and on a slow drawdown.
Another big cold front came thru the lakes area early this past
week and the water temperatures are now down in the high 50's and the
shad have pretty much completed their transition to the creeks and bays
and the sport fish are in fall feeding patterns.
Although we had some windy days this week there have been some
good reports of Largemouth being taken in the creeks and bays on both
lakes. As is the norm with
the fall bass fishing, some days the bite is really good and some days
it is only fair depending on the weather.
There are a number of Largemouth schooling in the creeks and bays
and when these fish are breaking on the baitfish the fishing can be fast
and furious. Right now the
weather forecast for the coming weekend and next week looks good with
highs in the 60's and low's in the 40's with south and westerly winds
prevailing all next week. Of
course weather forecasts can change so anglers need to monitor the
latest in wind/weather forecasts and plan accordingly.
Water temperatures and night time temperatures are now in the
range that anglers should be taking precautions to prevent hypothermia
in the case that they have an accident or get stranded on the water.
Pack some extra clothing with you in case you get wet and
survival items in case you get stranded.
Let someone know where you will be fishing and when you will be
coming home and have them check on you.
Largemouth
Bass: The Largemouth are
being taken in the creeks and bays on primary and secondary points as
well as on the shallow water flats feeding on schools of baitfish.
These fish on the points are being taken on crankbaits,
spinnerbaits, suspending jerkbaits and jigs.
The shallow fish are being taken on topwater lures, shallow
running crankbaits and spinnerbaits fished near wood (Barkley) and grass
beds ( Smallmouth
Bass: Smallmouth Bass are
being taken on main lake primary and secondary points on crankbaits,
spinnerbaits, suspending jerkbaits and jigs.
I have not had many reports of Smallmouth being taken in any
numbers yet on topwater lures on the main lake but this should not be
overlooked as this is the time of year when this bite normally gets
going. Some
of the productive lures reported this week are:
Lucky Craft Sammy in ghost lemon pearl, Lucky Craft Gunfish in
ghost lemon pearl, Strike King crankbaits in sexy shad, Bandit
crankbaits in rootbeer, Hook Some Bass spinnerbaits in blue glimmer,
Lucky Craft pointer in chartreuse shad, Rapala Xrap in black/silver,
Last Cast jigs in green pumpkin, Lewis rattletraps in blue/chrome and
Strike King red eye shad in sexy shad.
Crappie:
Crappie reports indicate that the Crappie are being taken in the
creeks and bays over brush piles in 8-12 ft of water by spider rigging
with small jigs and minnows and by vertically jigging small jigs.
There are reports of scattered Crappie being taken around shallow
brush by casting small jigs and fishing with small minnows under
bobbers. Catfish:
Catfish are being taken in the creeks and bays along the creek
channels with some roaming the flats feeding on schools of baitfish.
These fish are being taken on nightcrawlers, leeches and
yellowtail on bottom rigs. Bluegill:
There are a lot of reports of good catches of big bluegill being
taken around brush piles in the creeks fishing with small jigs and wax
worms fished on tight lines and under bobbers. Rockfish:
We are continuing to catch numbers of these true stripers as well
as some hybrids while bass fishing shallow in the creeks and bays on
spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits.
There are many of these fish schooling and when we encounter one
of these schools the fishing is fast and furious on these great
fighters. There
is still plenty of good fall fishing to be had here on the big lakes.
Actually we are just now getting into the better fall fishing so
if you want to get in some good fishing before the winter gets here you
should plan a trip now. If
you are in need of a guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament
preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction give me a
call or drop me an email. I
have open dates available this month and would be happy to take you out
for some late fall bass fishing, Now
is the time to start making your reservations for next season,
especially for the spring fishing. If
you wait too late to do so you may not be able to get the date(s) you
want. Reminder:
A gift certificate for a guided bass fishing trip makes a great
Christmas gift or other special occasion gift.
We are offering these certificates that are good for one year
from date of purchase now at 2007 prices.
Call me or drop me an email for information or to make your
purchase. Captain.
