Bass
Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 10/19/2007
Both
lakes are about one and one half feet above winter pool. We had
heavy rains and strong storms in the lakes area yesterday and last night
with a number of tornados spotted in the area. The weather should
is forecasted to clear for the weekend but depending on which weather
source you read there will either be some strong winds from the
southwest or there will be just some breeze from the southwest.
The current weather channel forecast is showing higher winds and the
national weather service is showing lower winds. As an example,
the wind forecast for today by the national weather service is west
winds at 10, the weather channel is forecasting west south west winds at
10 to 20. This is one big difference in winds forecast, especially
if you are fishing these big open lakes. We have had windy
conditions here for the past few days and from what I can tell by
monitoring both these sources, the weather channel has been closer on
the winds forecast than the national weather service all week. One
rule of thumb that we locals use here on the winds forecasts is to add
another 5 mph to the forecast since you are on open water. The
bass fishing here this past week has been fair at best with the fish
still in a fall transition. Water temperatures have been up and
down like a yo yo over the past week keeping the fish scattered.
As with last week's report, bass are being taken from the main lake
ledges to the backs of the bays. More shad did move shallow with
the cool down we had in water temperatures late last week but the water
temperatures have moved back up a couple of degrees with the heat we had
later this week. We are forecasted to cool down again after the
weekend and this should move more fish shallow as the water cools.
We are currently about 4 or 5 degrees above in normal water temperatures
for this time of year. Largemouth
Bass: Largemouth are being taken on a myriad of patterns with the
bite being scattered from the ledges near the mouths of the creeks and
bays to the flats in the backs of the creeks and bays. The ledge
fish are being taken on Smallmouth
Bass: Smallmouth Bass are being taken on main lake points and
secondary points in the bays on crankbaits, spinnerbaits and jigs
especially early and late in the day. No large numbers are being
reported but some nice fish have been taken. Some
of the productive lures reported this week are: Lucky Craft Sammy
in ghost pearl lemon, Zoom super flukes in white and shad patterns, Hook
Some Bass spinnerbaits in blue glimmer, Hook Some Bass vibe in
blue glimmer with Yamamoto twin tail trailer in blue pearl, Lewis
rattletraps in blue/chrome, Bandit crankbaits in rootbeer and rootbeer/chartreuse,
D&L jigs in Cumberland Craw and Last Cast finesse jigs in green
pumpkin with matching Net baits baby paca craw trailer. If
you are in need of a guide for some fun BASS fishing, tournament
preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction don't
hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email. November is
normally the best of the fall fishing and with the fall bite coming in
late this year it should be a good one. I have a number of dates
available for booking in November so plan your late fall trip now and
give me a call. FLASH:
Now is the time to start getting those gift certificates for a guided
bass fishing trip to give for Christmas. These certificates are
good for one year and will be sold at this year's prices for guided
trips. My guide prices will be going up next year so buying one of
the certificates to give for Christmas or other special occasions now
will result in a savings on next year's trip. Contact me by phone
or email for information. Captain.
