Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; Oct. 19, 2006
Bass Buster Guide Service

Kentucky Lake :
Water Level at Ky Dam - 354. 39
Surface Temperatue - 64

Lake Barkley :
Water Level at Barkley Dam - 354.45
Surface Temperature - 62

Both lakes are at or slightly above winter pool.  Overall the fishing is still slow for this time of year.  The bass fishing is still on and off with cold fronts moving through the lakes area every 24 to 48 hours.  The bite is scattered just like the fish.  You can have some good days if you are on the right spot at the right time but it has been more hit and miss than being able to run a steady pattern.  There are fish shallow and fish deep with some fish in between.  The best reports have been on the Crappie fishing but even these fish are scattered from deep to shallow and anglers are having to move here and there to find some fish.  Hopefully these cold fronts will slow down and the weather will stabilize for a while and settle the fish down into a good fall feeding pattern.  The creeks and bays are full of baitfish just waiting on the predators to come in and feed up.

Largemouth Bass:  The Largemouth Bass are being taken from the mouths of the creeks and bays to the shallow flats.  The deeper fish are being taken on the main lake points, lead in creek channel banks and secondary points on Carolina rigged creature baits, crankbaits, suspending jerkbaits and jigs.  The shallow fish are being taken on the flats as they are feeding on schools of baitfish.  These shallow fish are being taken on topwater lures, shallow running and lipless crankbaits and spinnerbaits.  It has been more opportunity fishing lately than pattern fishing, one day you can get the shallow fish to bite good and even run into some feeding schools and some days it is tough to get any numbers of fish.  On the good days the best bet is to stay shallow, on the tougher days you need to move around and hit a lot of points and lead in banks.

Smallmouth Bass:  The Smallmouth Bass are being taken on main lake points and first secondary points in the creeks and bays with some fish being taken on shallow main lake humps.  These fish are taking crankbaits, spinnerbaits, tube jigs and jigs.  Like the Largemouth the Smallmouth fishing has been slow.  A few Smallmouth are being taken shallow in the bays feeding on schools of baitfish but I have not found any feeding schools of Smallmouth as of yet.  The shallow fish are taking lipless crankbaits and spinnerbaits.

Some of the productive lures reported this week are:  Lucky Craft G-splash in ghost lemon pearl, Rebel Pop R in black/chrome,  Lucky Craft Pointer in blue ayu, Rapala X-rap in black/silver, Bandit crankbaits in rootbeer and rootbeer/chartruese, Hook Some Bass spinnerbaits in blue glimmer, Lewis Rattletraps in blue/chrome, S&S lipless crankbaits in threadfin shad and Hook Some Bass jigs in green pumpkin.

The best of the fall fishing is yet to come.  If you are in need of a guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction don't hesitate to give me a call or drop me and email.  I have the following dates open:

October:  30

November:  I have plenty of dates open in November...give me a call or drop me an email.
