Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 10/11/2007
Bass Buster Guide Service

Kentucky Lake :
Water Level at Ky Dam - 355.29  Surface Temperature - 75

Lake Barkley :
Water Level at Barkley Dam - 355.45  Surface Temperature - 74

Both lakes are approximately 3.5 feet below summer pool.  The heat wave we experienced last week and over the weekend ending abruptly this week with two arctic cold fronts that traversed the lakes area over the past 72 hours.  We have had strong north winds over the past few days and much lower temperatures.  The water temperatures are dropping, which is a good thing for those of us waiting on more shad and thus more bass to move shallow for the fall feeding.  The cold fronts obviously slowed the shallow water bite over the past few days, not that it was great last week with the heat wave, but we should see some significant improvement in the shallow water fishing in the very near future.  The better bite this week has been on the ledges around the mouths of the bays as the fish are staging there and on primary and secondary points in the bays.  I expect we will see some significant improvement in the shallow water fishing over the next week if the present weather forecast of highs in the upper 70's and low 80's with night temperatures in the 50's holds true.  The north winds are forecasted to end after tomorrow with a shift to a more southerly direction and the weekend looks like it will be a nice one to be on the water.

Largemouth Bass:  Largemouth are being taken on the shallow main lake ledges and ledges around the mouths of the bays on Carolina rigged small creature baits, slow rolled spinnerbaits and by dragging jigs.  Largemouth are also being taken on main lake primary points and secondary points in the bays (especially around chunk rock) on crankbaits, spinnerbaits, shaky head worms and jigs.  Some Largemouth are being taken early and late in the day on topwater lures in the backs of the bays and pockets off the main lakes (this bite has been slow the past couple of days) and on the flats in the bays during the day on spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, chatterbait type lures and Carolina rigged creature baits.

Smallmouth Bass:  Smallmouth are being taken on the main lake primary and secondary points, especially around chunk rock, on crankbaits, tube jigs and finesse jigs.  Although no large numbers are being reported, some nice fish are being taken.

Some of the productive lures this week were:  Lucky Craft gunfish in ghost pearl lemon, Hook Some Bass spinnerbaits in blue glimmer, Hook Some Bass vibe (chatterbait) in blue glimmer, Hook Some Bass baby brush hounds in watermelon/purple, Net Baits finesse worms in green pumpkin on shaky heads,  Last Cast Lures finesse jigs in peanut butter jelly and green pumpkin with matching baby paca craw trailers, Lewis rattletraps in blue/chrome and Bandit crankbaits in rootbeer and rootbeer/chartreuse.
