Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; 1/25/08 January 25, 2008
Air Temp: Low 9 / High 35 Water Temp: 41 Water Elevation: 355.2 (359 is Summer Pool, 354 is Winter Pool)) Water Clarity: A little color (3ft visibility) Fishing these past few days with the temps well below freezing could accurately be termed an “extreme sport“. I ventured out the other day on the lake for a couple of hours and found the water temp colder than I liked (41° ) and the bite slower than I liked, but did catch one nice Largemouth on my second cast and one nice Crappie an hour later. Luckily, my trolling motor steering cable broke so I went to the house. Last Friday (a week ago) I guided Fred Riggs Jr., his Dad Fred Sr., and his brother Dan. We were blessed with good conditions and good fishing. The air temps were in the upper 30’s, there was a bright sun to warm us, and almost no wind. We had steady action catching Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass and Crappie. Fred Sr. caught his lifetime personal best Smallmouth (5.5 Lbs), Fred Jr. caught his largest Crappie ever (a 2 pounder), and Dan came thru at the end of the day with a 2.5 Lb Crappie which was his personal best and biggest Crappie to come in the boat that day. It was a very enjoyable day on the water and I couldn’t have had better company. Fred Jr. was from Washington DC, his Dad was stationed at Ft. Campbell, and Dan was from Georgia. If you’re interested you can check it out on my site www.captainkirksguideservice.com Overall the fishing has been above average this winter for Bass. It would probably be best to limit your efforts to the milder temperature periods. Most of the Bass (Small and Large) we caught the other day came on small hair jigs. We did catch some on a green pumpkin sweet beaver fished on a ¼ oz jig. Silver buddies and jigging spoons are also producing. Jerk baits and crank baits I’m sure would catch fish also especially during warmer periods. We caught Bass fairly shallow the other day but always near deep water. Most fish were 8’ to 18’ deep on points and ledges but some were as shallow as 4’ and some as deep as 25’. The big Smallies were on the main lake and most of the Largemouths were just inside the mouths of bays. I’ve noticed an unusually large number of small Largemouths (12” to 14”) this winter and a good number of big Smallmouth. Looks to me like we’re in for good action Bass fishing this coming year.
