Bass Fishing Report; Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; Aug 17, 2006
Bass Buster Guide Service

Kentucky Lake :
Water Level at Ky Dam - 356.96
Surface Temperature - 85

Lake Barkley :
Water Level at Barkley Dam - 357.15
Surface Temperature - 85

Both lakes are two feet below summer pool with little fluctuation.  A cold front came thru the area early in the week and things cooled down here to more bearable daytime temperatures.  With the cold front of course came high pressure and slowed the fishing some but it was a fair tradeoff for the cooler weather.  I have noticed the bass bite getting better over the past couple of days and it should be pretty good by the weekend as another cold front approaches the area.  Of course with the shift in prevailing winds to the south over the next couple of days the afternoon temperatures with the humidity will be back up again.

Largemouth Bass:  Largemouth Bass are being taken on the river channel and creek channel ledges on the main lakes and near the mouths of the deeper bays.  These fish are being taken on Carolina rigged large worms, lizards and creature baits, Texas rigged large worms and jigs.  The ledge fishing is best when the current is being generated which has been during the afternoon.  There are fish being taken early and late in the day on the flats in the creeks and bays as they are schooling on schools of fry.  These fish are being taken on topwater lures, spinnerbaits, soft jerk baits and Texas rigged creature baits and tubes.

Smallmouth Bass:  Some Smallmouth Bass are being taken during the day on deep river channel ledges on Carolina rigged creature baits and tubes as well as jigs.  The better Smallmouth bite is at night on Kentucky Lake by fishing main lake primary and secondary points as well as some secondary points in the bays.  These fish are being caught on dark colored spinnerbaits, tube jigs, jigs and Texas rigged creature baits.  A few Smallmouth are being taken early and late in the day on the flats in the creeks and bays as they are mixing in with the Largemouth and feeding on the schools of fry.  These shallow water fighters are taking the same lures as the Largemouth.

Some of the productive lures reported this week are:  Lucky Craft Sammy in ghost pearl lemon, Lucky Craft G Splash in ghost pearl lemon, Chatterbuzz buzzbaits in white, Zoom horney toads in white and green pumpkin swirl, Hook Some Bass spinnerbatis in blue glimmer,  Zoom ol monster worms in plum and red shad, Zoom magnum lizards in green pumpkin, Hook Some Bass brush hounds in watermelon/red and watermelon/purple and Hook Some Bass tubes in chameleon craw and green pumpkin.

If you are in need of a guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction don't hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email.  You should be making your fall plans and reservations for the fall fishing.  October and November provide some of the best bass fishing of the year so don't wait too long to make your reservations.

I have the following dates available for booking in August and September:

August:  21, 22, 28, 30 and 31
September:  23 and 27
