The Fishers of Men Illinois
Central Legacy Tournament series kicked off with a meal at the
First Christian Church of Sullivan. All the anglers plus their
quest enjoyed a meal of pork chop sandwiches, green beans,
potato salad, potato chips and desert. There were thirty-five in
attendance who heard the Vice President of the National Fishers
of Men, Bob Eads, give a presentation on faith in everyday life
as well as fishing. He said “We cast out our lure with faith
that we will catch a fish and if we don’t catch one on the first
cast we keep on having faith that we will”.
Saturday morning
came to live on Lake Shelbyville as thirteen teams left the Wolf
Creek State Park boat ramp for the first of three Fishers of Men
Legacy Series tournaments to be held this year. Each team
consisted of one angler at least nineteen years old and the
other younger than nineteen. Most of these teams consisted of
father/son or daughter while other team were captained by
grandparents. Several teams were made up of anglers who enjoy
the time on the water with youth and teach them about the sport
of bass angling as well as the youth putting some fish in the
livewell to take to weigh-in.

The day started off good for
the father daughter team of John and Kristin Green if
Carrollton, IL. This was a new experience for Kristin as she had
never fished a bass tournament before. I actuality she was not
supposed to be here today. John had planned to fish with a son,
but Friday the son decided not to fish. This left the spot open
to Kristin. Kristin rose to the challenge in great stile early
in the morning when she caught a nice fish on lizard. That
single fish when brought to the scales in the afternoon not only
won big bass (2.58 pounds) but also put the team in first place

Another first time
tournament angler Bill Brown of Sullivan fishing with Chris Hall
of Mattoon, IL brought a single fish to the scales which weighed
1.82 pounds to put them in second place. Bill reported he caught
the fish on a spinnerbait the Chris had given him to try earlier
in the day.
One interesting side note
is that both of the youth that caught fish were wearing same
color and same similar Mossy Oak hoodies. Makes you wonder if
there is some luck in those sweathshirts.
From the looks of thing
there might have been a trend set here but Jesse Lopez of
Naperville, IL fishing with his son Anthony hooked up with a
bass weighing 1.52 pounds to take third place.
The next ‘Legacy’ Team
tournament will be held on Lake Shelbyville May 24th
with team meeting on Friday evening prior to the tournament. For
