ILLINI TEAM TRAIL

Jason Waldschmidt and Fred Meyers Win at shelbyville!
Shelbyville Lake, May 20, 2007, by Barry Featheringill

Water Temp: 75 degrees
Air Temp: 80 degrees
Winds” South at 5 mph with gust to 19
Sky: Clear with bright sunshine

It was a beautiful spring day Sunday on Lake Shelbyville when 71 boats took off from Eagle Creek State Park boat ramp for the second in series of the Illini Team Trail Bass tournament. The winds picked up as the day progressed and the pleasure boats were out in full force.

Jason Waldschmidt and Fred Meyers put together a winning bag of fish beating out the second place team by only 0.01 of a pound. Jason and Fred had a bag of five fish with a weight of 13.12 pounds. Fred was back fishing for the first time since having major surgery. He reported that Jason caught all the fish but he was good with the net. Jason reported catching the fish from mid-lake area clear down to the dam. The fish were caught with a variety of baits including Three fish came on a Gambler tube. One fish on a Rapala Shad Rap and the last fish on a Yo-zuri Rattlin Vibe. Two of the fish came off of one spot and then later in the day they went back and got another to go in the live well.

The second place team came to the scales with five fish and a total weight of 13.11 pounds, just 0.01 pounds behind the winners. Greg Coleman and  Todd Bates also used a variety of baits (Carolina Rig, Crankbait and Plastic worm) to bring a limit of fish to the scales. They caught their fish on secondary points with stumps. Greg felt that the fish had not yet spawned but would probably do so in the next seven to ten days. Greg reported that none of their fish were caught on laydowns.

The father-son team of Melvin and Josh Argo brought another full bag of five fish to the scales that was only 0.20 pound behind the leaders. They did however get the Ranger Cup check for $1000.00. This is the first year they have fished from a Ranger boat and it paid off “really nice and unbelievable” according to Melvin. The first and second place team were not fishing with Ranger boats and therefore did not qualify for the Ranger Cup award.  Melvin and Josh had a limit by about eleven and went to the north part of the lake and started catching bigger fish using a Carolina Rig with watermelon/chartreuse lizard. They reported catching at least eleven keeper.

The fourth place winners were a team of brothers Larry & David Rodman who brought four fish to the scales with a weight of 11.79 pounds.

The big bass was won by the team of Toby Shafer and Jim Stevens with a fish weighing in at 4.89 pounds.  They were also fifth place winners with three fish and a total weight of 11.66 pounds.

There were only four limits brought to the scales out of the seventy-one teams entered there were 116 fish brought to the scales with a total weight of 278.31 pounds.

The next Illini Team Trail tournament for the Northern Division will be June 10th again going out of Eagle Creek State Park ramp.
